Sunday Update complete
Bye Week: Detroit, New Orleans
Here are my rankings (if you want a second opinion, please see our formula-based projections - these are not tied into my rankings at all) for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Most importantly, the default rankings are now for PPR leagues.
**** PLEASE READ: Times change, and with them, so do I, even if I go kicking and screaming into the good night. The vast majority of the fantasy football universe plays with some form of PPR -whether it's a full point or 1/2 point. ESPN's default is full-point PPR, Yahoo's is .5 PPR. The DFS games for the vast majority are either half or full point PPR. I'm sympathetic to those of you who would prefer standard rankings, so please, feel free to ask your questions in the comments regarding how a player might change in a standard scoring league. ****
***PLEASE READ, PART II - The masses (ok, the not-so-silent minority) have spoken, and you really want more representation for standard leagues too, so the Flex Rankings are now Standard scoring.***
Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it. If there is no such note, that means it's my first pass at the rankings for this current week.
By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. This first week in particular, but in other weeks as well, I will change ranks according to injuries and sometimes even a change of heart. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?". And then refer to the rankings again before asking a generic starting decision question. If you really desire a response to a starting question that doesn't have added complexity, please use our Ask An Expert service - it comes with your subscription. Otherwise, my response will correspond with the rankings. If I rank one player before another, that's how I plan on making my starting decisions.
Quarterback
1. | Patrick Mahomes KC at NE Note: Mahomes threw his first two interceptions of the year and didn't throw for a touchdown, but still went over 300 yards and added a rushing touchdown. He gets the first of two back-to-back Sunday night games against the Pats this week. |
2. | *Matt Ryan ATL vs. TB Note: Ryan had x-rays on his foot, which turned up negative for any sort of serious injury. Not listed on Wednesday's initial injury report. |
3. | Tom Brady NE vs. KC |
4. | *Aaron Rodgers GB vs. SF Note: Rodgers' knee soreness is getting worse - he got tackled awkwardly on a scramble early against Detroit and was later seen adjusting his knee brace on multiple occasions. Was in the rehab group for Thursday's practice - which was the Packers' first practice of the week, because they are playing Monday night. ***Full practice Friday, no longer on the injury report.*** |
5. | Jared Goff LA at Den |
6. | Jameis Winston TB at Atl |
7. | Kirk Cousins MIN vs. Ari |
8. | Carson Wentz PHI at NYG |
9. | Philip Rivers LAC at Cle |
10. | *Ben Roethlisberger PIT at Cin Note: Roethlisberger has an elbow injury which impacts his throwing motion, though he downplayed it on Thursday. |
11. | Andrew Luck IND at NYJ |
12. | *Deshaun Watson HOU vs. Buf Note: Watson sustained a chest injury in the win Sunday night over the Cowboys and is considered day-to-day. Limited participation in Wednesday's practice, but Watson insisted he'd play this week. ***Threw on Friday, but it was still listed as a limited practice and is listed as questionable.*** |
13. | Andy Dalton CIN vs. Pit |
14. | Case Keenum DEN vs. LAR |
15. | Cam Newton CAR at Was |
16. | Russell Wilson SEA at Oak Note: Wilson threw the ball just 21 times, due to the success of the Seattle running game against the Rams. |
17. | Eli Manning NYG vs. Phi |
18. | Mitchell Trubisky CHI at Mia |
19. | Baker Mayfield CLE vs. LAC |
20. | *Marcus Mariota TEN vs. Bal Note: Still playing with a modified glove on his throwing hand. |
21. | Blake Bortles JAC at Dal Note: This was a Peak Bortles game - 430 passing yards, a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown, but four hideous interceptions against the Chiefs. |
22. | Derek Carr OAK vs. Sea |
23. | Alex Smith WAS vs. Car Note: A rushing touchdown and 77 garbage-time yards salvaged an otherwise pretty poor night. |
24. | Sam Darnold NYJ vs. Ind |
25. | Joe Flacco BAL at Ten Note: Good feelings ... gone. Flacco threw for 298 yards, but it took him 56 passes to do so and he never got in the end zone. |
26. | Dak Prescott DAL vs. Jax |
27. | C.J. Beathard SF at GB Note: Beathard accounting for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing), but also four turnovers in the loss to Arizona. |
28. | Josh Rosen ARZ at Min Note: Seventy five yards on the first throw from scrimmage, just 95 yards the rest of the game against the Niners. |
29. | Josh Allen BUF at Hou |
30. | Ryan Tannehill MIA vs. Chi Note: Tannehill's offensive line is in a world of hurt - when Laremy Tunsil left in the second half, they couldn't protect him at all. ***(Shoulder) Limited practice Friday, listed as questionable. I'm seeing some reporting (from Ethan J Skolnick) that Tannehill's shoulder is worse than what was initially reported, and he's closer to doubtful than questionable.*** |
Running Backs
1. | Todd Gurley LA at Den |
2. | Melvin Gordon LAC at Cle |
3. | James Conner PIT at Cin |
4. | *Saquon Barkley NYG vs. Phi Note: Tweaked his back on his second touchdown reception Sunday, but has been declared 'ready to go' for Thursday night. |
5. | Christian McCaffrey CAR at Was |
6. | Kareem Hunt KC at NE |
7. | Ezekiel Elliott DAL vs. Jax |
8. | James White NE vs. KC |
9. | Joe Mixon CIN vs. Pit |
10. | Carlos Hyde CLE vs. LAC |
11. | David Johnson ARZ at Min |
12. | *T.J. Yeldon JAC at Dal Note: Should get another week as the starter with a heavy workload. |
13. | Jordan Howard CHI at Mia |
14. | *Wendell Smallwood PHI at NYG Note: Could see a big jump in his workload now that Jay Ajayi is out, though it also appears that Corey Clement will be back this week. |
15. | *Marshawn Lynch OAK vs. Sea Note: Limited in practice Wednesday with a hip injury. ***Removed from the injury list.*** |
16. | *LeSean McCoy BUF at Hou Note: ***Possible trade to Philly seems less likely now.*** |
17. | Chris Carson SEA at Oak |
18. | *Tevin Coleman ATL vs. TB Note: Role could go back up this week if Freeman can't go. ***Freeman has officially been ruled out.*** |
19. | *Aaron Jones GB vs. SF Note: So much for the notion that talents wills out - Jones played only 22 snaps Sunday, fewest among the three Packers running backs. |
20. | Phillip Lindsay DEN vs. LAR |
21. | Tarik Cohen CHI at Mia |
22. | *Isaiah Crowell NYJ vs. Ind Note: (Ankle) Sat out practice both Wednesday and Thursday - status for Sunday very much in doubt. ***Limited practice Friday, now expected to play against the Colts.*** |
23. | Alex Collins BAL at Ten |
24. | Dion Lewis TEN vs. Bal |
25. | Latavius Murray MIN vs. Ari |
26. | Kenyan Drake MIA vs. Chi |
27. | Austin Ekeler LAC at Cle |
28. | *Nyheim Hines IND at NYJ Note: It looks as if Marlon Mack could return this week, which obviously clouds the playing time picture for Hines. |
29. | Bilal Powell NYJ vs. Ind |
30. | Derrick Henry TEN vs. Bal |
31. | Royce Freeman DEN vs. LAR |
32. | Alfred Morris SF at GB Note: Should get more of a workload this week with Breida already listed as doubtful. The only downside is that Kyle Juszczyk will be used a lot more in the passing game. Raheem Mostert will also probably factor in a little. |
33. | *Marlon Mack IND at NYJ Note: (Hamstring) Participated in a light practice on Monday. Full practice Wednesday. The Colts' situation just got more complicated. ***Mack is expected to start against the Jets.*** |
34. | *Lamar Miller HOU vs. Buf Note: (Chest) Will return this week, though whether it will be at full capacity remains uncertain. Limited at Wednesday's practice. |
35. | *Sony Michel NE vs. KC Note: (Knee) Limited practice Wednesday and Thursday - are they trying to preserve his workload, or did something crop up with the knee? ***Limited in practice all week, listed as questionable, and in fact could be a game-time decision.*** |
36. | *Adrian Peterson WAS vs. Car Note: Peterson suffered what he termed a dislocated shoulder Monday night - the team officially diagnosed him with a 'strained' shoulder on Tuesday. He isn't expected to miss this week's game against Carolina, but he's also seeking a second opinion on the injury. I'm keeping him at the bottom of the rankings until he practices. Listed as a limited participant Wednesday. ***Though he's listed as questionable, Peterson is expected to start and take a regular workload.*** |
37. | Frank Gore MIA vs. Chi |
38. | *Corey Clement PHI at NYG Note: (Quadriceps) Listed as a full participant in Tuesday's practice. With Jay Ajayi out, Clement's recovery takes on greater urgency. It's confirmed that he will play this week. |
39. | Ty Montgomery GB vs. SF Note: Played a season-high 29 snaps last week, though that translated into only three targets despite the Packers trailing nearly the full game. |
40. | Ito Smith ATL vs. TB Note: Once again, Judgment Day arrived on Sunday for Ito. |
41. | Ronald Jones II TB at Atl |
42. | Javorius Allen BAL at Ten |
43. | *Alfred Blue HOU vs. Buf Note: Struggled on the ground (20 carries, 46 yards) but salvaged his day with eight catches for 73 yards. Miller is due back this week, but I'm not yet sure what the snap share will be. |
44. | Chris Ivory BUF at Hou |
45. | Jamaal Williams GB vs. SF |
46. | Duke Johnson CLE vs. LAC Note: Only had six touches in the Browns full overtime win over the Ravens, but had the last two carries that were rather productive. I don't see how they can't find more uses for him, but then again, I've always been a Duke Johnson apologist. |
47. | Nick Chubb CLE vs. LAC |
48. | *Mark Walton CIN vs. Pit Note: Walton gained a little extra job security after the Bengals waived Thomas Rawls. |
49. | Mike Davis SEA at Oak |
50. | *Peyton Barber TB at Atl Note: Could lose carries to Jones and/or Rodgers following the bye. |
51. | Wayne Gallman NYG vs. Phi |
52. | *Kapri Bibbs WAS vs. Car Note: Might take on a significant role if Peterson can't play this week. ***It now looks as if Chris Thompson won't go, but Peterson will. There should be opportunities available for Bibbs.*** |

54. | Kenjon Barner NE vs. KC |
55. | Jalen Richard OAK vs. Sea |
56. | Jacquizz Rodgers TB at Atl |
57. | *Jordan Wilkins IND at NYJ Note: ***Losing time with Marlon Mack, who is expected to start, returning to action.*** |
58. | *Josh Adams PHI at NYG Note: Should be a part of the Eagles' backfield this week with Jay Ajayi and likely Darren Sproles out. |
59. | Doug Martin OAK vs. Sea |
60. | C.J. Anderson CAR at Was Note: Anderson received only eight offensive snaps in the win over the Giants. |
61. | *Raheem Mostert SF at GB Note: Should be the backup to Alfred Morris this week, though Kyle Juszczyk will get the passing downs. |
62. | *Jamaal Charles JAC at Dal Note: Signed with the Jaguars after Corey Grant had to go on IR. |
63. | Marcus Murphy BUF at Hou |
64. | Malcolm Brown LA at Den |
65. | *Chase Edmonds ARZ at Min Note: ***(Back) Questionable for Sunday's game against the Vikings.*** |
66. | Spencer Ware KC at NE |
67. | *Rashaad Penny SEA at Oak Note: Played zero snaps with Chris Carson returning. |
68. | *Matt Breida SF at GB Note: Considered doubtful for Week 6 with an ankle injury. Didn't practice Thursday (the Niners' first practice of the week) - considered day-to-day. ***Put in a limited practice Saturday, which makes him a game-time decision on Monday.*** |
69. | *Chris Thompson WAS vs. Car Note: Suffered a rib injury in Monday night's loss to the Saints. Listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday, though the Redskins only had a walk-through rather than a full practice. ***Thompson is now a game-time decision, and isn't expected to play.*** |
70. | *Devonta Freeman ATL vs. TB Note: Suffered a bone bruise in his foot in the loss to the Steelers, sat out practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday. ***Ruled out again this week.*** |

72. | *Leonard Fournette JAC at Dal Note: (Hamstring) Expected to miss another week, at minimum. Already ruled out again this week. ***Has a chance to play next week.*** |
73. | *Darren Sproles PHI at NYG Note: (Hamstring) Wasn't in attendance for the start of Tuesday's practice, which suggests that he won't be able to go on Thursday night. Ruled out again this week. |
74. | *Giovani Bernard CIN vs. Pit Note: (Knee) Didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday. ***Officially ruled out this week.*** |
75. | *Le'Veon Bell PIT at Cin |
76. | *Jay Ajayi PHI at NYG Note: Torn ACL, on IR and out for the season. |
77. | *Corey Grant JAC at Dal Note: Out for the season with a lisfranc foot injury. |

4. | Mike Evans TB at Atl |
5. | Keenan Allen LAC at Cle |
6. | Davante Adams GB vs. SF |
7. | Julio Jones ATL vs. TB |
8. | JuJu Smith-Schuster PIT at Cin |
9. | DeAndre Hopkins HOU vs. Buf Note: Got tackled inches from the end zone, preventing a really huge night. Kept hitting the spin button in overtime to set up the game-winning field goal. (Foot) Limited practice Wednesday. |
10. | Tyreek Hill KC at NE |
11. | Stefon Diggs MIN vs. Ari |
12. | A.J. Green CIN vs. Pit Note: Poor history against Joe Haden, who almost certainly will be shadowing him. |
13. | *Cooper Kupp LA at Den Note: Diagnosed with a concussion - has to get through the protocol this week. Same status as Cooks - cleared for individual drills on Thursday. ***Officially cleared the concussion protocol and will play Sunday.*** |
14. | Emmanuel Sanders DEN vs. LAR |
15. | *Robert Woods LA at Den Note: ***Moved down a few slots with both Kupp and Cooks looking like they'll play.*** |
16. | Julian Edelman NE vs. KC |
17. | Jarvis Landry CLE vs. LAC |
18. | Calvin Ridley ATL vs. TB |
19. | Corey Davis TEN vs. Bal |
20. | Allen Robinson CHI at Mia |
21. | Tyler Boyd CIN vs. Pit |
22. | John Brown BAL at Ten |
23. | *Alshon Jeffery PHI at NYG Note: Garnered the attention of Xavier Rhodes, who did a good job covering him and limiting him to three catches. |
24. | *Brandin Cooks LA at Den Note: Suffered a concussion in the win over the Seahawks - coach Sean McVay is optimistic that he'll play in Week 6. Set for individual drills Thursday - if those go well, he'll be cleared for full practice Friday. ***Officially cleared the concussion protocol and will play Sunday.*** |
25. | Keelan Cole JAC at Dal |
26. | DeSean Jackson TB at Atl |
27. | Dede Westbrook JAC at Dal |
28. | Sammy Watkins KC at NE |
29. | Quincy Enunwa NYJ vs. Ind Note: A victim of game flow (five targets), a drop, and a few overthrows in the win over the Broncos. It sucks, but it shouldn't hurt his long-term value. |
30. | Sterling Shepard NYG vs. Phi |
31. | *Josh Gordon NE vs. KC Note: (Hamstring) Limited at Wednesday's practice. ***Listed as questionable but is expected to play Sunday night.*** |
32. | Taylor Gabriel CHI at Mia |
33. | Michael Crabtree BAL at Ten Note: Once again drew more attention for a drop than his catches against the Browns - couldn't come up with one in the end zone late in the fourth quarter that could have given the Ravens a win. |
34. | Tyler Lockett SEA at Oak |
35. | Chris Godwin TB at Atl |
36. | Devin Funchess CAR at Was |
37. | Amari Cooper OAK vs. Sea Note: Turned invisible again last week. The whipsawing continues. He is the Ryan Braun of Fantasy Football for me. |
38. | *Will Fuller HOU vs. Buf Note: (Hamstring) Had just three targets in the overtime win over the Cowboys. The usual limited practice Wednesday - though that hamstring limited him in the game Sunday night more than usual. ***Does not carry an injury designation any longer.*** |
39. | *Doug Baldwin SEA at Oak Note: Targeted just once in the loss to the Rams - perhaps I was a little too quick to presume he was back. |
40. | *Marquez Valdes-Scantling GB vs. SF Note: Solid job stepping in for Allison and Cobb - 68 yards and a touchdown. |
41. | Jordy Nelson OAK vs. Sea |
42. | Demaryius Thomas DEN vs. LAR |
43. | *Chester Rogers IND at NYJ Note: Small bump up with Hilton looking less likely to play. |

48. | *Courtland Sutton DEN vs. LAR Note: Made a highlight reel catch early, but appeared to get hurt late when he got rolled into - though he later re-entered the game. He also had a 40+yard catch-and-run brought back on a sketchy OPI call (against him). (Ankle) Limited in Wednesday's practice. ***Full practice Thursday.*** |
49. | Taywan Taylor TEN vs. Bal |
50. | Kenny Stills MIA vs. Chi |
51. | Christian Kirk ARZ at Min |

76. | Cordarrelle Patterson NE vs. KC |
