Cohen informed the Jets on Thursday that he's retiring from football, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old last played in a game Week 3 of 2020, when he suffered an ACL tear that cost him the rest of that season and all of the next one. He suffered an Achilles' tear in spring of 2022 and spent most of 2023 with Carolina's practice squad, but reports out of Jets training camp this summer suggested Cohen had regained some of his old explosiveness and was a viable candidate for return work. Xavier Gipson remains the most likely Jet to make an impact there, and Cohen may have sensed that he was unlikely to earn a roster spot as a backup return specialist without much value on offense. Whatever the case, he's retiring after a week of training camp practices.

Cohen's 2020 season lasted three games before a collision on a punt return resulted in a torn ACL, sidelining him for the rest of the year. Heading into his fifth NFL campaign, it's not clear where the pass-catching specialist fits into Chicago's offense. David Montgomery established himself as a three-down weapon in Cohen's absence, and the team added another versatile backfield option in Damien Williams during the offseason. That creates a lot of competition for targets, even if Cohen is still the best of the trio at that aspect of the game. On the bright side, the Bears' passing game as a whole should be improved, or at least more consistent, with first-round pick Justin Fields and veteran Andy Dalton replacing the scattershot Mitchell Trubisky at the top of the QB depth chart. Plus, the front office didn't add any other significant receivers to the mix at wide receiver or tight end, instead banking on improvement from WR Darnell Mooney and TE Cole Kmet. Assuming he's 100 percent recovered from his knee injury, Cohen offers speed and elusiveness in the open field that no one else on the roster can match, even if his lack of size or power means he needs to gain most of his yards before contact, not after a defender has gotten their hands on him.
Along with the rest of the Chicago offense, Cohen was a major disappointment last season. He failed to make much of an impact on the ground, and his efficiency as a receiver took a significant step backward with his eight drops being a major eyesore, though some of that can be blamed on Mitchell Trubisky's inaccuracy. Cohen still has tremendous elusiveness and wheels in the open field, and he landed among the league leaders in top recorded speed when he hit 21.42 mph on a 71-yard punt return in Week 5. On the other hand, his lack of size (5-6, 191) and power becomes apparent when defenders do get their hands on him, as his average of 1.2 yards after contact last season would've ranked last if he had enough carries to qualify. The Bears brought in offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and veteran QB Nick Foles to help fix the passing game, additions that should benefit Cohen given his consistent passing-down role. That could allow him to return to something closer to the 8.0 yards per target he managed in 2018, rather than last season's ugly 4.4. Meanwhile, David Montgomery seems locked into the early down role, and whatever window Cohen might have had to prove he could be more than just a scatback appears to have closed.
The scatback saw his role in the Bears' offense increase in 2018, as his reliability as a receiver and game-breaking speed and elusiveness in the open field gave the team a dynamic element it didn't have from anyone else on the roster. That might have been only a teaser for another step forward in 2019. Chicago shipped Jordan Howard to Philadelphia, and while the team signed Mike Davis from Seattle and traded up in the draft to grab David Montgomery in the third round, Cohen could be headed for a bigger role on the ground after failing to see triple-digit carries in either of his first two NFL seasons. The offense as a whole remains focused on its aerial attack under former Andy Reid assistant Matt Nagy, and that's the area in which the undersized back excels. He finished sixth in receptions among running backs last year, and if the offense is more efficient and productive in its second season under Nagy and third year with Mitchell Trubisky at the helm, there should be even more targets available for Cohen. He fell just short of 1,200 scrimmage yards last season, but there's a path to him surpassing that number this year.
Cohen exploded out of the gate with triple-digit scrimmage yards twice in his first three NFL games, but his production dwindled as the season progressed, mainly because the whole offense was sluggish under rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the unimaginative John Fox and Dowell Loggains calling shots. Fox is gone, replaced by former Andy Reid assistant Matt Nagy, and while that should bode well for the unit as a whole, Cohen especially could benefit from an increased focus on the passing game. The 5-6 scatback is unlikely to ever handle a workhorse role, but his speed and elusiveness make him dangerous in the open field, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him top the 53 catches and 353 receiving yards he amassed in 2017. Jordan Howard remains firmly in the lead role for the Bears, but Cohen has the talent and potentially the opportunity to make an impact as the passing-down complement.
A fourth-round pick in this year's draft, Cohen joins a crowded Bears backfield but has a clear role available to him as a pass-catching threat and third-down option. Cohen caught 62 passes over his final two seasons in college, and his 4.42 40-yard dash time as well as exceptional elusiveness and vision mark him as a player who can rip off big gains if he gets the ball in his hands in the open field. At just 5-6, 179, he may not be much use between the tackles, and despite his skill set as a runner he has limited experience returning kicks. As a change of pace from Jordan Howard, Cohen could prove to be effective with a handful of touches per game, or maybe more than a handful depending on how quickly Mitchell Trubisky takes over under center and starts looking for check-downs.

Announces retirement Thursday
RBFree Agent
August 1, 2024
Cohen, who'd last played in a regular-season game in 2020 due to various injuries, informed the Jets on Thursday that he's decided to retire, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2017 fourth-round pick of the Bears was making a comeback attempt with the Jets this offseason and training camp, and head coach Robert Saleh had recently indicated Cohen looked like he'd gotten his trademark shiftiness back after suffering a multi-ligament knee tear, fractured tibial plateau and an Achilles tear within a three-year period. Cohen finishes his NFL career with 1,101 rushing yards, 1,575 receiving yards, 1,613 return yards and 15 total touchdowns across 51 regular-season games.
