Josh Doctson

The Redskins' first-round pick in 2016, Doctson has been a disappointment. He missed most of his rookie year with an Achilles injury and was inefficient on two 78-target seasons thereafter. As a result, the Redskins declined to pick up the $10 million, fifth-year option on his rookie contract, removing some of their incentive to develop him further this year. At 6-2, 202, and with 4.50 40 speed, Doctson is a tall receiver with average speed, but he is an explosive athlete - 41-inch vertical leap, 131-inch broad jump and 4.08-second shuttle time. He's shown flashes of his ability on occasion - two receptions for 40-plus yards and six touchdowns in 2017 - but consistency has been lacking to say the least. After being let go by Washington during final cut-downs, Doctson will now look to carve out a role with the Vikings, but he's not looking at much volume as long as Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs remain healthy.

A 2016 first-round pick who missed virtually all of his rookie season, Doctson showed some glimpses last year, enough to warrant tempered optimism. His per-play numbers were poor - only 6.4 YPT - but he averaged 14.0 YPC and had two catches of 40-plus yards on 78 targets in 16 games, demonstrating his health and big-play ability. At 6-2, 206, and with 4.5 speed, Doctson has good size and merely average wheels, but he had a 41-inch vertical leap, 131-inch broad jump and 4.08-second short shuttle - all elite marks for explosiveness - at the 2016 combine, and he also has good ball skills. Accordingly, the Redskins were disappointed last year's QB, Kirk Cousins, didn't throw Doctson more 50/50 jump balls. We're not sure new QB Alex Smith is the man to take those chances, either - Smith, despite his uncharacteristic deep throwing last year, is notoriously risk-averse and loath to commit turnovers. In any event, Doctson will start opposite Paul Richardson - with Jamison Crowder in the slot - and should see a career high in targets and plenty of work in the red zone.

Doctson's rookie year was over before it started. A sore Achilles' tendon in spring OTAs never went away, and after suiting up for two games, last year's 22nd overall pick shut it down for good. At 6-2, 202 with 4.50 40 speed, Doctson's physical skills don't jump off the page, but he's athletic -- 131-inch broad jump -- and he put up big numbers in college -- 25 TDs in his last 23 games. The environment should be more favorable in Washington for Doctson this year with DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon gone and only Terrelle Pryor (and to a lesser extent Brian Quick) brought in to replace them. That means Doctson could start opposite Pryor with Jamison Crowder working out of the slot, though TE Jordan Reed, barring injury, will also have a big role. In March, Doctson declared himself healthy and proceeded to avoid the PUP list at the start of training camp.

The 22nd overall pick, Doctson is a nice combination of size (6-2, 202), speed (4.5 40), athleticism (131-inch broad jump) and college production (25 TD in his last 23 games). Assuming the Redskins don't cut Pierre Garcon – at press time they indicated they'd keep Garcon and DeSean Jackson despite drafting Doctson - it's likely they'll integrate Doctson into the offense gradually. But Jackson doesn't have the frame to be a go-to receiver, and Garcon is a borderline No. 2 at this point in his career, so Doctson could be Kirk Cousins' top target out wide by midseason. Keep in mind, tight end Jordan Reed is the team's star pass catcher, and he'll get most of the work near the end zone.
