Chris Boswell

Chris Boswell

33-Year-Old KickerK
Pittsburgh Steelers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Boswell is entering his 10th season as Pittsburgh's kicker, having produced six years with a FG percentage above 90 and two years south of 72 percent. Overall, he's sixth in career FG percentage (87.2), including 30 of 37 from 50-plus yards (81.1 percent) despite playing his home games in one of the less-friendly stadiums for kicking. Twenty-one of his 30 career makes from 50-plus yards came the past three seasons, but Boswell's fantasy value has nonetheless been marginal thanks to a lack of PAT volume (three straight years with fewer than 30 tries). The strong track record at least makes him a consideration for favorable matchups, with upside to be an every-week starter if the Pittsburgh offense breaks out of its long-term slump under OC Arthur Smith and QB Russell Wilson. Boswell made all three of his extra-point tries and both of his field-goal attempts in a 27-14 win over the Browns on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Boswell opened the scoring with a 30-yard make in the first quarter, then made a 54-yard field goal to give the Steelers a 13-7 lead going into halftime. The veteran kicker is now 36-for-39 on FGAs this season and remains a perfect 29-for-29 on PATs.

Boswell made only 71.4 percent of his field-goal attempts last year, ending a three-year streak of at least 90 percent. The catch? Nineteen of his 28 attempts came from 40 yards or longer, and while he made only half in the 40-49 range, he went 7-for-9 from 50-plus. That, after going 8-for-9 from 50-plus the year before. And if 28 tries doesn't sound like many, consider that Boswell missed five games and was attached to a lousy offense. The Steelers trust him, and while the struggles on offense may continue, a talented Pittsburgh defense can help put Boswell in range for three-pointers.
Fourth on the all-time FG percentage list, Boswell attempted a career-high 40 field goals in 2021, second to only Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson. Perhaps more surprising, Boswell made eight of his nine attempts from 50-plus yards, after attempting just 12 combined in his first six seasons. Boswell does come with some risk as the Steelers enter a new era at QB, especially after ranking 23rd in extra-point tries last season.
Boswell forgot how to kick in 2018, but he's missed just three field-goal attempts in two subsequent seasons, re-establishing himself as one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history. Unfortunately, he doesn't get many chances from long distance, in part because Heinz Field makes those tries so difficult. The other issue is a declining Ben Roethlisberger, though Pittsburgh did finish 12th in points scored last year.
A top-notch kicker throughout his first three NFL seasons, Boswell cratered in 2018 but then bounced all the way back in 2019. He now is at 87.0 percent on field goals and 95.5 percent on PATs for his career, albeit with just 11 attempts (eight successful) from 50-plus yards. Even without the long-distance chances, Boswell offers real upside now that Ben Roethlisberger is back under center for Pittsburgh.
Boswell was so good his first three seasons that he still owns career conversion rates of 85.2 percent for field goals and 94.7 percent for extra points, even after crumbling to pieces in 2018. The Steelers will give him another shot during training camp, but they did procure competition in the form of rookie Matthew Wright, who converted 77.5 percent of FG attempts and 98.6 percent of PATs in four years at UCF.
Boswell has averaged 1.98 field goals and 2.3 PATs per game since taking over as Pittsburgh's kicker in 2015, converting 89.5 percent of his FG attempts despite playing in the AFC North. His home stadium is notoriously difficult on kickers, as the longest field goal in Heinz Field's history is 53 yards. Boswell makes up for it with volume and reliability inside of 50 yards, benefiting from a prolific Pittsburgh offense.
Boswell's fantasy value regressed after a solid 12-game rookie season, as he attempted seven fewer field goals and made eight fewer. A 10-PAT gain helped, but Boswell still finished only with 99 points in 15 games, the seventh fewest among players who appeared as many times. His numbers on a weekly basis were actually worse, as 11 of his 25 field-goal attempts came in two games -- he had no more than one in nine other games. The Steelers also don't seem to trust him from deep, as he missed both attempts from 50-plus last year after getting the same number of attempts in 2015.
Boswell became the starter in Week 5 last year after Josh Scobee struggled in place of the injured Shaun Suisham, who suffered a torn ACL in August, and the rookie certainly did enough to seriously compete for the job again this season. Boswell’s 90.6 percent field-goal conversion rate was seventh-best in the league, and his 32 attempts tied him for eighth in the league despite playing four fewer games than all other kickers tied and ahead of him. The Steelers’ offense is expected to be elite once again, which should allow Boswell to have another solid fantasy season given that kickers have accounted for more than 30 percent of the team’s total points in each of the last three years.
Backup kicker, unlikely to make the team.
Boswell was signed by the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Rice to challenge Randy Bullock for the place-kicking job, but was waived in August.

First with three six-FG games

November 17, 2024
Boswell became the first kicker in NFL history to convert six field goals in three different games in his career when he made all six field-goal attempts in Sunday's 18-16 win over the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Two of those three games have come this season, as Boswell also joined John Carney in 1993 as the only kickers with two games of six-plus made field goals in one season. The 33-year-old Steelers kicker is enjoying an excellent campaign, having converted 29 of 30 field-goal attempts this season.
