2024 Fantasy Outlook
Flacco signed a one-year deal in March with $4.5 million guaranteed to back up Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis. Flacco gives the Colts a veteran capable of keeping the team afloat should Richardson go down. That’s what he did last year in Cleveland, after joining the Browns in mid-November. By December, he was the starter and guided the Browns to the playoffs, earning Comeback Player of the Year honors. Flacco’s on-target rate was 67.6 percent -- 33rd of 35 QBs with at least 200 attempts -- partly because he went downfield at such a high rate -- 38.3 percent of attempts went at least 10 yards (2nd), 12.3 percent at least 20 yards (3rd). Among QBs with at least 200 attempts, his 9.3 air yards per attempt ranked second and his 7.9 YPA was sixth. Flacco still has a strong arm, and at 39, he still has something left in the tank. Returning to No. 2 role
Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced Wednesday that Flacco will return to a backup role with Anthony Richardson having been named the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season, JJ Stankeviz of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After Richardson was benched following the Colts' Week 8 loss to the Texans, Flacco started both of the past two contests. However, he struggled to protect the ball in losses to the Vikings and Bills, as Flacco completed 67.7 percent of his throws for a respectable 7.3 yards per attempt between the two games but tossed four interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown) and lost two fumbles. Despite Flacco's struggles, Steichen previously said Monday that the 39-year-old veteran would continue to direct the offense in Week 11, only to change course on that decision two days later. Richardson has had his own issues with both accuracy (44.4 percent completion rate) and turnovers (seven interceptions, two lost fumbles) over his six starts this season, but the 4-6 Colts are hoping that the two-week benching will have the 22-year-old in a better position to succeed as he returns to the lineup this Sunday against the Jets. Meanwhile, Flacco will stay ready in the event Richardson misses time with an injury over the final seven games of 2024 before heading into free agency this offseason.

Flacco re-signed with the Jets during the offseason and enters camp as the favorite to beat out Mike White for the backup spot behind 2021 second overall pick Zach Wilson. The 37-year-old Flacco played well in limited action last year, coming nine yards short of 300 in his lone start of the season. Flacco could end up making the Week 1 start after Wilson injured his knee in the preseason opener.

Benched for Richardson
Flacco, who started the last two games for the Colts, will cede the top job to Anthony Richardson for the remainder of the season, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Shane Steichen made the announcement Wednesday, noting that Richardson had made significant strides over the last two weeks in the areas of off-the-field preparation and attention to detail. Flacco will thus revert to the backup role he opened the season in after committing six turnovers during his pair of most recent starts, both Indianapolis losses.
