This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.
Sunday Update complete.
Bye Weeks: Broncos, Eagles, Jaguars, Patriots, Redskins, Texans.
Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.
Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:
- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.
These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Should I start Patrick Mahomes or Eli Manning?"
These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.
Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights, roughly around 10:00 pm ET. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning.
I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.

Quarterbacks
1. | *Patrick Mahomes KC at TEN Note: (Kneecap) 'Trending in the right direction' after sitting out a second consecutive game. This ranking obviously reflects the expectation that he'll play. Full practice Wednesday, but second in line in drills behind Matt Moore. ***Full practice all week, back in action.*** |
2. | *Drew Brees NO vs. ATL Note: Playing with the same splint that he used in the win over Arizona before the bye. |
3. | *Lamar Jackson BAL at CIN Note: Held out of practice Thursday with an illness. ***Full practice Friday.*** |
4. | Aaron Rodgers GB vs. CAR |
5. | Russell Wilson SEA at SF |
6. | *Dak Prescott DAL vs. MIN Note: Might not have Amari Cooper this week. |
7. | *Jameis Winston TB vs. ARI Note: Big numbers but another horrible mistake that led to a Seattle score. |
8. | Kyler Murray ARZ at TB |
9. | Jimmy Garoppolo SF vs. SEA |
10. | Jared Goff LA at PIT |
11. | Philip Rivers LAC at OAK |

14. | Derek Carr OAK vs. LAC |
15. | Josh Allen BUF at CLE |
16. | Daniel Jones NYG at NYJ |
17. | *Kirk Cousins MIN at DAL Note: Once again will be without Adam Thielen. |
18. | *Brian Hoyer IND vs. MIA Note: The pick-six was awful, but Hoyer consistently moved the Colts offense after the injury to Brissett and was a bad kick away from leading them to a road victory. Brissett practiced Wednesday and Thursday, so I'm essentially flip-flopping he and Hoyer. ***And now I'm flipping it back. Brissett declared out. Chad Kelly will be the backup.*** |
19. | *Kyle Allen CAR at GB Note: Should be the starter the rest of the season with Cam Newton going on IR. |
20. | *Mitchell Trubisky CHI vs. DET Note: Will remain the starter after laying another egg against the Eagles. |
21. | Ryan Fitzpatrick MIA at IND |
22. | Sam Darnold NYJ vs. NYG |
23. | Baker Mayfield CLE vs. BUF |
24. | Mason Rudolph PIT vs. LAR |
25. | *Jeff Driskel DET at CHI Note: ***Starting in place of Matthew Stafford.*** |
26. | *Ryan Finley CIN vs. BAL Note: Named the starter during the bye week. |
27. | Taysom Hill NO vs. ATL |
28. | *Matt Moore KC at TEN Note: I'm assuming that Pat Mahomes will play. ***Retreating to the bench with Mahomes returning.*** |
29. | *Matthew Stafford DET at CHI Note: Added to the injury report Wednesday with a back injury that is different from last year's back injury. ***Has fractures in his back and will not be allowed to play. Jeff Driskel will start in his place.*** |
30. | *Jacoby Brissett IND vs. MIA Note: Sprained MCL - he remains optimistic about Week 10, but I'm operating under the assumption that he won't play until he gets in a full practice. Limited practices Wednesday and Thursday. ***Ruled out this week.*** |
31. | *Andy Dalton CIN vs. BAL Note: Got benched on his birthday for Ryan Finley. |
Running Backs
1. | *Christian McCaffrey CAR at GB Note: (Knee) Limited practice Thursday. ***Removed from the injury list on Friday.*** |
2. | Saquon Barkley NYG at NYJ |
3. | Ezekiel Elliott DAL vs. MIN |
4. | Dalvin Cook MIN at DAL |
5. | Derrick Henry TEN vs. KC |
6. | *Alvin Kamara NO vs. ATL Note: (Ankle) How much of a role will he have if he returns as expected this week? Could workload-management be an issue? Good practice Wednesday, even if he was officially listed as limited. ***Full practice Thursday and Friday.*** |
7. | Mark Ingram BAL at CIN |
8. | *Marlon Mack IND vs. MIA Note: Wasn't explosive against the Steelers, but was an able workhorse. |
9. | *Josh Jacobs OAK vs. LAC Note: (Shoulder) Full participant in Tuesday's practice - should be good to go for Thursday. |
10. | Aaron Jones GB vs. CAR |
11. | *Nick Chubb CLE vs. BUF Note: How much will Kareem Hunt cut into Chubb's workload? |
12. | *Chris Carson SEA at SF Note: Had 133 total yards last week, but also fumbled twice, losing one. |
13. | David Montgomery CHI vs. DET |
14. | *Melvin Gordon LAC at OAK Note: Looked like himself for the first time all season in the win over the Packers. |
15. | *Le'Veon Bell NYJ vs. NYG Note: (Knee) Had an MRI on Monday and won't practice Wednesday. That the Jets activated Josh Adams from the practice squad is an ominous sign. MRI came up negative, and he was scheduled for a limited practice Thursday. ***It now looks as if he's playing.*** |
16. | *David Johnson ARZ at TB Note: (Ankle) Expected to return this week, but keeping him down here until he practices, given his recent history. Full practice Wednesday, and is expected to play against the Bucs. The Cards might put Johnson and Drake in the game at the same time. ***Removed from the injury list, so should be full-go this week, especially with Edmonds still out.*** |
17. | Todd Gurley LA at PIT |
18. | *Damien Williams KC at TEN Note: Appears to at least be the hot hand for Andy Reid, if not the lead back locked in going forward. ***McCoy a healthy scratch.*** |
19. | Tevin Coleman SF vs. SEA |
20. | *Ronald Jones TB vs. ARI Note: Named the starter over Peyton Barber. |
21. | *Jaylen Samuels PIT vs. LAR Note: Bumped up with James Conner now not expected to return this week. |
22. | *Devonta Freeman ATL at NO Note: Moved down a few spots. |
23. | Austin Ekeler LAC at OAK |
24. | *Devin Singletary BUF at CLE Note: Took over the starting job from Frank Gore last week and did well with it, though he ceded most of the goal line and short-yardage carries to Gore, but for the last series of the game. |
25. | *Latavius Murray NO vs. ATL Note: Even if Kamara returns this week, look for Murray to have a bigger role than he did prior to Kamara's injury. ***Sean Payton hinted confirmation of the notion that Murray will have a good-sized role this week.*** |
26. | Kenyan Drake ARZ at TB |
27. | Joe Mixon CIN vs. BAL |
28. | *Matt Breida SF vs. SEA Note: ***(Ankle) Cleared from the injury list.*** |
29. | Jamaal Williams GB vs. CAR |
30. | *J.D. McKissic DET at CHI Note: Had a receiving touchdown against the Raiders and looked like the better of the two Lions backs last week. |
31. | *Kalen Ballage MIA at IND Note: Next in line to start, but will Miami treat him as a normal starter? If not, I'm not sure whether Myles Gaskin or Patrick Laird is next. |
32. | Gus Edwards BAL at CIN |
33. | *Ty Johnson DET at CHI Note: Even with Carson on IR, Johnson did little with his opportunity against the Raiders, getting outgunned by J.D. McKissic. |
34. | Dion Lewis TEN vs. KC |
35. | *Frank Gore BUF at CLE Note: Lost the starting job to Devin Singletary, yet still gets every short-yardage snap, even though he got stuffed on five separate occasions against the Redskins last week. |
36. | *Peyton Barber TB vs. ARI Note: Had about half the snaps that Jones got, and Jones did well with that work. |
37. | Tarik Cohen CHI vs. DET |
38. | Alexander Mattison MIN at DAL |
39. | Jalen Richard OAK vs. LAC |
40. | *Rashaad Penny SEA at SF Note: Chris Carson fumbled twice last week, but Penny still had only 11 snaps, with four carries for 12 yards. The good news for him is that C.J. Prosise has been a healthy scratch the last two weeks. |
41. | *Kareem Hunt CLE vs. BUF Note: 'Will definitely have a role' in his return from suspension this week. |
42. | *Bilal Powell NYJ vs. NYG Note: Appears to have surpassed Ty Montgomery as the top backup to Lev Bell, which could become pertinent this week with Bell having an MRI on his knee. ***Downgraded with Lev Bell looking likely to play.*** |
43. | Nyheim Hines IND vs. MIA |
44. | Tony Pollard DAL vs. MIN |
45. | Myles Gaskin MIA at IND |

50. | *Brian Hill ATL at NO Note: ***Clear No. 2 with Ito Smith ruled out for the season.*** |
51. | Patrick Laird MIA at IND |
52. | *Trey Edmunds PIT vs. LAR Note: (Ribs) Had 12 carries for 73 yards, running better than Samuels, but between the rib injury and the likely return of James Conner, it's unlikely that we'll be able to apply that going forward. Sat out practice Wednesday. ***Full practice Friday, removed from the injury list.*** |
53. | Jeff Wilson SF vs. SEA |
54. | *Darrell Henderson LA at PIT Note: ***Malcolm Brown could be back.*** |

13. | Robert Woods LA at PIT |
14. | *Amari Cooper DAL vs. MIN Note: (Knee) Didn't practice Wednesday and Thursday, but expected to return to practice Friday and play Sunday night. ***Expectation remains that he'll play, but will put himself through the paces in pregame warmups to make sure.*** |
15. | *Golden Tate NYG at NYJ Note: Shepard's setback means that Tate will be the Giants' top receiver most if not for all of the remainder of the season. |
16. | Christian Kirk ARZ at TB |
17. | John Brown BUF at CLE |
18. | *Davante Adams GB vs. CAR Note: Had a meager 43 yards despite receiving 11 targets. (Toe) Limited in Wednesday's practice. ***Doesn't have an injury designation.*** |

7. | *O.J. Howard TB vs. ARI Note: (Hamstring) Expected to be back this week, but I'm going to wait to bump him up until he practices.
