Alexander signed with the Broncos' practice squad Wednesday, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Alexander is fully healed from an Achilles injury suffered last season and recently worked out for the Falcons and Vikings. The veteran linebacker played nine regular-season games for the Steelers last season, recording 41 combined tackles, 1.0 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. He'll likely be a candidate to find his way to the 53-man roster once he's up to speed and proves he's in game shape.

Alexander has top-12 linebacker IDP upside when healthy, but he's had tremendously bad injury luck the past couple years, to the point that it's casting doubt over his long-term durability. He missed four games with a hamstring injury in 2017, tore an ACL in 2018 and suffered a pectoral tear in October 2019. Upon his return last year, he then suffered a biceps injury that required offseason surgical repair. Those injuries are numerous but also all over the place, perhaps offering some reassurance that he's avoided any chronic conditions. Dre Greenlaw played reasonably well in Alexander's place as a 2019 fifth-round pick, however, so there's a non-zero risk that Alexander loses some share of the snap workload if he continues to miss practice reps.
Alexander piled up empty-calorie tackles in Tampa Bay, but IDP owners get the same exchange rate on those as they do the more meaningful production from Luke Kuechly and Bobby Wagner. Numbers are numbers, and Alexander piles them up better than most. He posted 145 stops in 2016, his only 16-game season, while in 2017 he was on a 134-tackle pace per 1,000 snaps. His mammoth contract with the 49ers now dictates a workload as high as 1,100 snaps. Alexander's skill set might be rough, but he's athletic if nothing else, affording him upside as a blitzer and in coverage.
Aside from a four-game PED suspension in 2015 and a four-week absence due to a hamstring injury last year, Alexander has been wildly productive in each NFL season. He posted 145 tackles in 2016, the only year he played all 16 games, while in his other 24 games he’s produced at a pace of more than 125 tackles per 16. Alexander has conclusively pushed aside the still-great Lavonte David as the lead tackle hog in the Tampa defense, and he has so far supplemented his top-grade tackle production with six interceptions and six sacks in 40 career games.
Alexander could rank ahead of teammate Lavonte David in fantasy football, even if David clearly is the superior player in real life. For whatever schematic changes might have factored into David's career-low tackle totals last year, Alexander's role in the defense remained tackle-friendly. Indeed, with 248 tackles in 28 career games, Alexander is locked in as one of the best IDP linebackers. He's not just a tackle source, though -- he also has six sacks and three interceptions in his young career. He turns just 23 in August and could keep improving.
Alexander began wowing Bucs coaches at around this time last year and never looked back, starting at middle linebacker for the first 12 games of 2015 before serving a four-game suspension for PED use. Despite his rookie campaign being curtailed, the LSU standout was an IDP superstar, notching 93 tackles (59 solo), three sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, two interceptions and nine passes defensed. With new defensive coordinator Mike Smith's scheme reported to be even more aggressive than the one deployed by former head coach Lovie Smith in 2015, Alexander could be primed to offer outstanding fantasy returns in the coming season.
Alexander will battle Danny Lansanah, who had a career year last season, for one of the team's starting linebacker positions. Given the advantage Lansanah has in terms of proven production, Alexander could benefit from a year of taking snaps as backup to the veteran.

ANALYSIS
Alexander spent the 2023 season with the Steelers and tallied 41 tackles across nine games before tearing his Achilles.
