Breshad Perriman

Perriman returned to Tampa Bay for a six-game stint in 2021 after spending 2020 with the Jets. The 2015 first-round pick of the Ravens made notable impacts Week 14 against the Bills (a 58-yard touchdown catch) and Week 18 versus the Panthers (a 5-44-0 line on six targets), and the brief reunion led to Perriman being brought back on a one-year deal this offseason. The speedster's presence offers some additional reinforcement for a wideout corps that will be down Chris Godwin to start the season, but the combination of Perriman's spotty injury history and questionable hands and the presence of Tyler Johnson, Cyril Grayson and Scotty Miller could make a roster spot or playing time an uphill battle.

At 6-2, 215, Perriman is big and physical, and he ran a blazing 4.24 40 at his 2016 pro day. It seems he's been around forever, but Perriman won't turn 28 until September, so he's still in his late prime. That said, aside from a brief stint at the end of 2019, he's never made good on his considerable physical gifts, so Perriman's an interesting gamble, nothing more. From one passing game wasteland to the next. Perriman signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Lions, but he was let go in late August and joined the division-rival Bears shortly thereafter. He could challenge Marquise Goodwin for the No. 3 receiver job in Chicago.

A disappointment since being taken in the first round of the 2016 draft, Perriman showed a spark at the end of last year with a 37-25-506-5 receiving line for an injury-riddled Bucs offense over the season's final five games. It was enough to land him a one-year, $8 million deal with the Jets, presumably as their top outside receiver - at least until second-round pick Denzel Mims surpasses him. At 6-2, 215, and with an off-the-charts 4.24 40 time (at his pro day), Perriman has the physical tools to be great. Almost all of the league's sub-4.3 guys are no more than six feet tall and weigh less than 200 pounds. But playing wide receiver also requires football skills, and the Jets mark Perriman's fourth team in five years for a reason. With only slot man Jamison Crowder, the rookie Mims and perpetually injured Quincy Enunwa around, Perriman will get a big chance to make good on his pedigree, should the fickle whims of Adam Gase not get in the way. Sam Darnold has been inconsistent in his career, but he has the arm strength to make use of Perriman's skills.

Up to this point, Perriman's career has been largely defined by both injury and underachievement. However, the raw physical talent embodied by Perriman's 6-2, 215-pound frame and 4.3 speed finally began to translate consistently on the field during the latter half of the 2018 campaign in Cleveland. Perriman finished the season with 16 receptions for 340 yards (21.3 YPC) and two touchdowns, with a quarter of those grabs checking in above 20 yards. With DeSean Jackson now in Philadelphia, the role of downfield threat in an offense that heavily relies on one is Perriman's for the taking, which could result in the fourth-year receiver finally paying some handsome fantasy dividends. Jackson logged 74 targets over 12 games last season under the prior offensive system, and Perriman, who's topped out at 66 targets thus far in his career, could potentially be in for a similar workload if he masters coach Bruce Arians' system and develops the necessary rapport with quarterback Jameis Winston.

Even giving him a pass for a season-ending knee injury that wiped out his rookie season, Perriman has a grand total of 43 catches on 101 targets (42.5 percent catch rate) for 576 yards (5.7 YPT) in 27 career games. The Ravens declined his fifth-year option and there's a chance Perriman isn't even on the team by the end of the first week of training camp due to potential cap savings. If Perriman does crack the 53-man roster, there's no guarantee he's more than the fifth option at receiver. Considering that WR3 in Baltimore's offense last season saw just seven percent of the targets, that doesn't bode well for Perriman making much of an impact with whatever reps he does get. Perriman could one day tap into his first-round potential, but it's highly unlikely that it will happen in Baltimore. After missing his entire rookie year, Perriman was eased into the offense slowly in Year 2, only eclipsing 40 offensive snaps twice. That should change dramatically this season. The Ravens did sign Jeremy Maclin in June, but the team lost Steve Smith, Kamar AIken and TE Dennis Pitta earlier in the offseason. Perriman, Maclin and Mike Wallace should all be heavily involved, as Baltimore ranked near the top of the league in pass attempts the past two years and doesn't have much pass-catching depth beyond that trio and RB Danny Woodhead. At 6-2, 215 with blazing 4.24 40 speed, Perriman is an athletic freak - virtually no one with that weight and catch radius runs a sub 4.3 40. Last year, Perriman averaged 15.1 YPC on 66 targets, but he caught only half the passes thrown his way and needs to work on his route running. Perriman's path to a breakout may have partially been obstructed by the addition of Maclin, but it's still there for the taking if the third-year wideout displays major improvement. Perriman's case took a hit when he suffered a hamstring injury in early August and subsequently missed the rest of training camp. This marks the third time in three years that he's essentially missed all of training camp, so while the Ravens still hope to have him back by Week 1 as their No. 3 receiver, Perriman probably missed out on his chance to push Maclin and Wallace for significant playing time in two-wide formations.

A seemingly minor knee injury early in training camp wound up costing Perriman his rookie season. It turns out he partially tore his PCL, and he then partially tore the ACL in his other knee in June. Perriman did make it back for Baltimore's final preseason contest, setting him up to make his NFL regular-season debut in Week 1. Assuming that's the case, last year's 26th overall pick is one of the fastest players in the league, timed between 4.22 and 4.27 in the 40 during his UCF Pro Day. Moreover, for someone that fast, Perriman is unusually big - at 6-2, 212 he dwarfs the DeSean Jacksons and T.Y. Hiltons of the league. Perriman isn't especially polished for a first-round pick, and he'll have competition for targets in Steve Smith, Kamar Aiken and fellow burner Mike Wallace. But a big role is there for the taking, and Joe Flacco certainly has the arm to get him the ball downfield.

Taken with the 26th overall pick, Perriman was expected to compete for a Week 1 starting job in a thin receiving corps, until a knee injury on the first day of training camp kept him out for the entire preseason. He could still earn the starting job down the line, but he's in danger of missing at least the first game or two of the season, leaving Kamar Aiken as the likely starter across from Steve Smith. At 6-2, 212, with blazing speed (timed between 4.22 and 4.27 during his UCF Pro Day), Perriman could eventually take over much of Torrey Smith's deep-threat role but also has enough size to be a red-zone factor.
