Target Breakdown: Week 7 WR/TE Recap & Week 8 Sleepers

Target Breakdown: Week 7 WR/TE Recap & Week 8 Sleepers

This article is part of our Target Breakdown series.

Blowouts were the theme of Week 7, unfortunately, with just three of 13 games decided by a single score. That's not to say the other 10 were all non-competitive, but at least half of those were decided by midway through the fourth quarter. For that reason, a number of our game-by-game breakdowns below will reference pre-fourth-quarter snap share, though the charts shown with each team still show full-game stats, per usual. Now let's get to it...

  • Fant is top 10 among TEs for pretty much any usage stat you can come up with, but his 6.4 aDOT ranks just 36th among 54 TEs with double-digit targets, while 1.49 yards per route places 20th.
  • Hinton didn't do much, but he did work ahead of Diontae Spencer and John Brown as the No. 3 receiver. Granted, he'll fall back to No. 4 when Jerry Jeudy returns from a high ankle sprain, which seems to be right around the corner...

  • Landry returned from a knee injury to suit up for the first time since Week 2, and he unsurprisingly led the team in targets with Beckham playing through a shoulder injury.
    • Plus, Case Keenum was at QB, and Baker Mayfield will be playing through his own shoulder injury once he returns. There are a lot of moving parts here, but don't be surprised if it somehow leads to a big second half of the season for Landry.
  • Donovan Peoples-Jones (groin) was held out after suffering an injury in pregame warmups.
  • The Browns really mixed up their personnel looks, running at least 10 snaps from each of the following groupings: 11, 12, 13, 01
  • Beckham got nine of 10 snaps in 12 personnel. Landry got five. Bryant actually played all 10, while Hooper (six) and Njoku (four) shared.
  • In 11 personnel, Higgins (88%) actually got the most playing time, followed by Beckham (76%), Landry (68%), Hooper (64%), Schwartz (48%) and Njoku (36%).
    • The big game for Njoku never really led to an expanded role, and now he's arguably heading in the wrong direction.

  • Just when you think all hope is lost...
  • Different coaching staff and a lot of different teammates, but Crowder did do pretty well in Elite Joe's four starts for the Jets last year: 8-116-1, 7-48-0, 2-26-1, 1-16-0.
    • With a downward trend, admittedly
  • Moore finished with only 1-13-0 on six targets, but he had a 19-yard rushing TD and ran the second most routes on the team.
  • Crowder played zero of 10 snaps with two or fewer receivers on the field. The Jets just didn't have many of those.
  • In formations with 3+ WRs, Crowder got 95% of snaps, followed by Griffin (73%), Davis (71%), Moore (62%), Cole (38%) and Mims (33%)
    • HOWEVER, Davis played 87% in 11 personnel before the fourth quarter, while Mims was at only 18%. So, Mims and a couple other guys took garbage-time work from Davis.
  • Snap shares before Q4: Davis (84%), Crowder (78%), Griffin (76%), Moore (51%), Cole (43%), Mims (18%)

  • Smith went Full Jonnu before the shoulder injury, with five targets and 52 yards on only eight routes.
    • Smith left early in the second quarter and didn't return.
    • Q1 snap shares: Smith (88%), Meyers (88%), Agholor (69%), Henry (50%), Bourne (31%), Harry (25%).
  • Pre-Q4 snap shares: Meyers (95%), Henry (81%), Agholor (72%), Bourne (63%), Jonnu (30%), Harry (30%).
  • Henry has TDs in four straight, but with just six targets over his past two games total. It is possible a Smith absence could value Henry from low-end TE1 to solid TE.
  • This game was a lesson in how to score 50 points without helping anybody's fantasy team. How very Belichickian.

  • Terrace Marshall was out with a concussion and Brandon Zylstra (hamstring) is on IR, which left Kirkwood and Smith to platoon in the No. 3 role.
  • I take this all very seriously as a diehard Robby Anderson fan, but it is pretty amusing that the nightmare season started with a 57-yard touchdown on his first target.

  • Pitts now ranks fourth among TEs with 2.36 yards per route.
    • And, despite having a bye already, he's now seventh in targets (44) and routes (200).
    • His 18.3% target share places only seventh, but that's for the full season. Over his past three games, Pitts is at 21.8% target share, fourth best among TEs in that time.
  • Gage returned from an ankle injury and reclaimed his role as the No. 2 receiver, finishing with 4-67-1 on six targets, though he ran one fewer route than Atlanta's No. 2 TE Hayden Hurst.
  • Hurst has four or more targets in three straight games. Granted, Ridley missed one of those games and Gage missed two.
  • Between the two-TE formations and Cordarrelle Patterson, there really isn't much room for a No. 3 receiver here.

  • Gesicki saw three targets on 39 percent of snaps Week 1... and has since logged at least six targets and 64 percent of snaps in every game.
    • The 82% snap share Sunday was fourth-largest of his career.
    • In fact, four of the 20 largest snap shares of Gesicki's career have come in the past four weeks (69%, 78%, 70%, 82%). Miami's incompetence has worked in his favor, with the team's RBs combining for only 16.4 carries per game.
  • The Dolphins were in 12 personnel for 59 of 73 snaps, 81%.
    • Will Fuller (finger) and DeVante Parker (hamstring) both missed another week, but Preston Williams did return to the lineup... and caught one pass for five yards.
    • Snap shares in 12 personnel: Waddle (83%), Gesicki (82%), Shaheen (78%), Hollins (53%), Williams (44%), Smythe (41%).
    • The Dolphins also ran 40-plus snaps from 12 personnel in Weeks 5 and 6. In other words, the Week 7 rate was higher, but they'd already been way, way above league-average for a few games now.
  • Waddle remains heavy on targets, light on air yards, with a 6.25 aDOT this week.
    • That's actually slightly deeper than his season mark of 5.3 aDOT, which ranks 80th out of  83 WRs with 20 plus targets.
    • Only guys behind him are Cole Beasley (5.3), Jamison Crowder (4.9) and Rondale Moore (2.1). Not bad company, but not what most expected for Waddle.

  • Higgins finally got the air yards in addition to the targets... but it was still Chase (and Uzomah) who had the big day.
  • The guy I'm really worried about? Boyd. He's slower, smaller and older than his WR teammates, and Boyd's target share is only 17.8% in the five games Higgins has played.
    • Higgins' is 27.4%, and Chase's is 23.6%.
    • Does Chase see more going forward because he's so, so good, or does he see less because opponents give him more attention? I say more, but I also think Tee will get his.
  • Uzomah has done great with his chances this year, but even Sunday he saw just three targets.
    • He also took eight pass-blocking snaps, doubling his season total, per PFF. That helped Cincinnati deal with Baltimore's blitzing
    • Five TDs in his past four games! On 14 targets!

  • Lamar Jackson defaulted to Hollywood deep balls for his second read the way Joe Flacco used to default to Ray Rice dump-offs.
    • One was a spectacular touchdown, while the rest were varying levels of desperate or ill-conceived.
    • Brown saw seven targets 20-plus yards downfield, three more than any other player in Week 7 (Cooper Kupp got four; Byron Pringle, A.J. Brown and Tee Higgins each saw three).
  • Oliver saw a season-high five targets and finished with 2-29-0, but he may drop to third on the depth chart with the Ravens hoping to have Nick Boyle (knee) after their Week 8 bye.
  • Bateman and Andrews both played 81% of snaps before the fourth quarter.
    • It wasn't a huge difference, but I did notice that the Ravens pulled Jackson, Andrews and Bateman a couple plays before Hollywood. Which seems strange... maybe Brown wanted a 100-yard game?

    • And now Davante Adams is on the reserve/COVID-19 list, leaving Lazard as Green Bay's likely No. 1 receiver Thursday night at Arizona.
    • Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstring) is on IR still, but he's eligible to return and hasn't been ruled out.

    • That's a messy WR situation behind Hill.
    • Hardman isn't gonna happen, and I think it's mostly because he just isn't that good.

  • Jones has played 50%, 66% and 43% of snaps his past three games, with four, five and four targets. That covers Weeks 3, 6 & 7.
    • It's possible he'd still play 85% if truly healthy. But we may never find out!

  • Goedert took on an every-down role, while No. 2 TE Jack Stoll played 19% of snaps.
  • Goedert took 51 of 55 snaps (93%) in 11 personnel, and nine of nine snaps in 12 personnel.
    • Even in a bad offense, Goedert's combination of talent and playing time is tantalizing.
    • And he blocked on just one of 37 pass snaps. Woot woot.

  • Darren Waller (ankle) was a late scratch, thrusting Moreau into an every-down role.
    • Moreau still played most of his snaps in-line (68%). He got 18% in the slot, 8% in the backfield and 6% wide.
    • Moreau blocked on only five of 37 pass snaps, per PFF.
    • Waller, for the year, is at 43% in-line, 40% slot and 17% wide.
  • Consider me unsurprised that Waller being injured didn't really change much for Ruggs or Edwards. One-game sample, granted.
  • Two bold predictions in one: This won't be Renfrow's last 1,000-yard season. And we won't have to wait long for the second.
    • Yes, I know he's slow.

  • Rough season when your housecat-goes-full-lion moment is just another nine-point loss at the end of the day.
  • Hoo-rah for Amon-Ra! Geronimo!
    • And he doesn't even have Jalen Ramsey as an excuse. Per PFF, St. Brown took 35 of his 43 snaps in the slot, while Ramsey played just seven of his 69 there (the Rams used him as more of a pure corner, almost, with 52 perimeters snaps).
  • Raymond put up 6-115-0 on eight targets, including 54 YAC.
    • He had 6-37-0 on seven targets the week before.
    • 15 targets on 89% and 81% of snaps over a two-week stretch. Can't ignore it, even if he's pint-sized.

  • In case you were wondering Sean McVay's thoughts on whether Van Jefferson or DeSean Jackson is the better player at this point in their respective careers...
    • Jefferson played 94% of snaps, after three straight games between 58-68%. And he finished with 4-43-1 on a season-high seven targets. But you'd still think Jackson has a decent-sized role most weeks, right?
  • With Davante Adams seemingly about to miss a game, is it too early to start talking about Kupp winning the receiving triple crown? He's got it right now, but Adams is just four receptions behind (56-52) and 65 yards behind (809-744).

  • Brate saw three of his four targets in the end zone but finished with a goose egg. Woof.
    • He has just 15 targets in four games sans Gronk.
    • Howard has 14, but he finished with only 1-9-0 on nine routes Sunday.
  • Godwin feels a little disappointing, but he's more or less on track relative to ADP after his 8-111-1 receiving line this past Sunday.
    • He's averaging 6.0 catches for 74.3 yards, with four TDs (one rushing) in seven games).
  • Evans is tied with Zach Pascal for second-most targets inside the 10-yard line (seven).
    • Evans is 5-for-7, Pascal 2-for-7. And Cooper Kupp is 6-for-9. Nice.
  • Johnson filled in for Antonio Brown (ankle) as the No. 3 receiver, and while he finished with only 2-16-0 on two targets, Johnson ran just three fewer routes than Mike Evans.

  • Collins' 28 receiving yards were a team high.
  • Over the past four weeks, Cooks averaged 5.5 catches for 45 yards on 8.0 targets.
    • However, he did face Buffalo, New England, Indianapolis (his one good game, 9-89-0) and Arizona. So while his early season production was unsustainable, Cooks shouldn't be 45-yards-per-week bad the rest of the way.

  • Ertz ran a route on 56% of Kyler Murray's dropbacks in his first game with the Cardinals.
    • I'll take an L on that one. I thought he'd be eased in, given how well the team has been playing and how little they've thrown to tight ends in the past.

  • With Parris Campbell (foot) on IR and T.Y. Hilton (quad) inactive, Dulin stepped up as the No. 3 receiver.
    • Ok, he caught two passes for no yards on four targets. "Stepped up" may not be the right term. But he does have at least one fan.
  • Pascal hasn't topped 8.4 PPR points since Week 2, but he's still played at least 82% of snaps in every game, and he's seen at least five targets in six of seven. Of course, his season highs are seven targets, five catches and 48 yards... not much of a ceiling unless he scores twice (which he did Week 1).
  • Pittman is playing well and leads the team in basically every receiving category, usage or otherwise. However, he isn't seeing dominant volume, now down to 7.1 targets per game and instead relying on excellent efficiency(70.0% catch rate, 10.2 YPT).
    • You could argue that he should have less than 508 yards but more than two TDs.
  • Pittman has five targets inside the 10-yard line, 31.3% of the team total and tied for seventh most in the league
    • But he has only two catches and zero TDs on those plays, and neither of his touchdowns came in the red zone.

  • This is where I give up on Aiyuk. While he should still be rostered in dynasty and deep leagues, he's cuttable for 10/12-team redraft.
  • Dwelley and Woerner formed a timeshare at tight end, after Dwelley had played 91% of snaps in the first game without George Kittle (IR/calf).
  • Samuel now leads the NFL in target share at 34.1%, a sliver ahead of Davante Adams (34.0%) and Cooper Kupp (33.8%).
    • Brandin Cooks is fourth at 31.2%. The awful environment caught up to him, but he's still dominating what's available.

And the banged-up Tampa secondary is coming to town this week, in a matchup where Sean Payton won't necessarily be able to sit on the ball the way he'd like to.
  • Alvin Kamara leads all RBs with 22.4 target share.
