Buffalo worked out Shaheen (knee) on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Shaheen spent all of last season on Miami's injured reserve list, but it now appears he could soon get a new opportunity with the Bills. Buffalo is dealing with a rash of injuries in its tight ends room, so it's understandably trying to stock up at the position ahead of Week 9.

Shaheen was acquired by the Texans in August, but after he failed a physical with the team he reverted back to the Dolphins. If he can re-prove his health, the 2017 second-rounder will compete for a depth tight end slot with Miami.
Shaheen compiled a career-high 150 receiving yards in his inaugural season with the Dolphins, finally staying healthy for a full 16-game slate and proving efficient as a reserve complement to Mike Gesicki. The addition of rookie third-round pick Hunter Long will cut into Shaheen's workload in 2021, but he could have an opportunity in 2022 if Gesicki and Durham Smythe aren't re-signed.
After failing to carve out a role in Chicago across three injury-riddled seasons, the Dolphins acquired Shaheen for a late-round pick just ahead of training camp. Mike Gesicki is firmly entrenched as the top tight end in Miami, but if Shaheen is able to finally stay healthy he could make a push for the No. 2 job. In his three-year career, he's managed just 26 catches for 249 yards and four scores to date.
Since Chicago has a number of solid receivers, including starting tight end Trey Burton, Shaheen will have precious few opportunities to contribute to the passing attack. In two years with the Bears to date, he's been targeted 20 times in 19 games, compiling an 85 percent catch rate and 8.8 yards per target. Those are exceptional numbers for any player, but his situation is such that he'll find it difficult to be a consistent option in the Bears offense.
Efficiency was the name of Shaheen's rookie year – he caught 86 percent of his targets and turned 12 catches into three touchdowns. Not bad, especially when you consider all the offensive chaos around him. New coach Matt Nagy was complimentary of Shaheen all spring; then again, the Bears threw a huge contract at free agent Trey Burton, who Nagy compared to Travis Kelce. Shaheen's 2018 fantasy value will probably depend on how quickly Burton can get up to speed; and if Burton is healthy all year, Shaheen's interesting, theoretical upside might have to stay on fantasy waiver wires.
Although the Bears drafted Shaheen with their second-round pick in the 2017 draft, he'll face a steep challenge as he looks to make the leap to the NFL from his collegiate experience at the Division II level. He's a physical marvel at 6-6, 278 pounds, and despite his size, he was drafted as a receiving tight end after recording 57 passes for 867 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. One of the reasons the team coveted him was an ability to dominate 50-50 balls while also being able to run over defenders. With Zach Miller currently slated to be the primary receiving tight end and Dion Sims also ahead of him on the depth chart, Shaheen should be provided time to grow into his role, which makes sense as he plays a position that many high-level college athletes struggle to master early in their careers. He'll be more valuable this year as a speculative pick in dynasty leagues than he'll be in redraft leagues.

ANALYSIS
The tight end was a second-round pick of the Bears in 2017 but was never able to turn his size and athleticism into consistent production as a receiving option. Shaheen last played in the NFL in 2021, spending 12 games with the Dolphins, but he could provide additional depth for the Colts.
