2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tonyan burst onto the scene in 2020, developing excellent chemistry with Aaron Rodgers en route to 586 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns. The tight end regressed with just two touchdowns through eight games in 2021, then missed the second half of that season due to a torn ACL. He bounced back a bit in his final season with the Packers, posting 470 yards (the second-highest total of Tonyan's career) and two TDs. Tonyan's production then cratered on the Bears in 2023, as he finished with just 112 yards and no touchdowns as Cole Kmet's backup. Tonyan signed with the Vikings in May, completing his tour of the NFC North. He could play a prominent role out of the gate as T.J. Hockenson probably won't be available to begin the season while recovering from January surgery on a torn ACL. Read Past Outlooks
Cut from Minnesota's practice squad
The Vikings cut Tonyan from their practice squad Friday.
ANALYSIS
Tonyan bounced between Minnesota's active roster and practice squad throughout the campaign, and he has played in five games, logging 14 offensive snaps without a target. The veteran tight end has had success in the NFL in the past -- including in 2020, when he tallied 52 catches for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Packers -- so it seems likely that he'll find another opportunity with a team in need of tight-end depth. Tonyan's departure made room for the team to officially sign former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to the practice squad.

During the first five years of his career in Green Bay, Tonyan was at his best in 2020, when he caught 52 of 59 targets for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. That was one of the most efficient seasons we've seen from a tight end not named Travis Kelce or George Kittle. Last year, Tonyan's 67 targets were the most he's had in a campaign, which he turned into his second-most productive season (470 yards and two TDs). Now in Chicago, he'll go from being the clear No. 1 option to a backup role behind Cole Kmet. Based on Tonyan's past success, if Kmet misses time, the former could become a fantasy factor.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Chance at top role early
Tonyan could be the Vikings' top pass-catching option at tight end to open the regular season if T.J. Hockenson opens the 2024 campaign on the PUP list due to last season's knee injury, Kevin Patra of NFL.com suggests.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's condition will be closely monitored throughout training camp and preseason before a decision is made on whether he'll open the campaign on the PUP list. If Hockenson is indeed sidelined or at least limited early, Patra points out Tonyan, who has two 50+ reception seasons in his career, is the best pass catcher between him, Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt, although he adds converted receiver N'Keal Harry could be a wild card if he distinguishes himself on the practice field and exhibition games.
