Durham Smythe

29-Year-Old Tight EndTE
Miami Dolphins
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Smythe was Miami’s clear No. 1 tight end in 2023, but that role didn’t translate to much production. He set a career high with 366 yards but didn’t get into the end zone, as the Dolphins ran their quick-strike offense through wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, as well as running backs Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane. Smythe has just three touchdowns in 95 NFL games, and while his blocking skills will likely keep him on the field, his already small slice of the pass-catching pie will likely shrink even further after Miami signed fellow tight end Jonnu Smith to a two-year deal in the offseason. Smythe failed to secure his lone target during Miami's 32-20 loss to the Jets on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Smythe's production totals declined notably due to the ascension of tight end Jonnu Smith in 2024, but to see him finish with just nine catches for 57 yards (on 17 targets) while suiting up for all 17 regular-season games was a more significant step back than anticipated. Though Smythe has one year remaining on his contract, the Dolphins have a potential 'out' this offseason for only $2.7 million in dead cap, a route that the team could realistically opt to take.

In a Dolphins offseason that saw Mike Gesicki walk and Hunter Long traded as part of the deal to acquire Jalen Ramsey, it's telling that Miami prioritized re-signing Smythe to a two-year extension. Though the tight end is a capable receiving option when called upon, he's only reached the 300-yard mark once in his career. His hallmark has been versatility and outstanding blocking, but considering that Tyler Kroft is the only other established TE on the Dolphins' roster, Smythe is at least facing an interesting opportunity in a high-flying passing offense.
The decision to re-sign Smythe to a two-year contract even after handing Mike Gesicki the franchise tag speaks volumes about his value as a role player. A plus blocker and passable receiver, Smythe is an excellent complement to Gesicki, though he's not a candidate for fantasy relevance outside of multi-TE leagues.
Smythe has emerged as a valuable depth tight end, as he's a reliable blocker and capable of catching passes when necessary. The arrival of rookie third-round pick Hunter Long, however, threaten's Smythe's grip on the No. 2 gig. In any case, Mike Gesicki figures to dominate looks in the receiving game.
The 2018 fourth-round pick took significant steps forward in his development in 2019, allowing him to secure the No. 2 role behind Mike Gesicki, an athletic standout who was selected two rounds prior to Smyth in the same draft class. However, Smyth does most of his damage as a blocker and only offers marginal pass-catching upside, having corralled just seven of 14 targets for 65 yards across a full 16-game slate last year.
The 123rd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Smythe was selected by the Dolphins with the clear intention of being developed into a blocking specialist. Smythe made enough strides during his rookie season to carve out a rotational role during the last five weeks of the season, but the addition of Dwayne Allen, one of the league's best blocking tight ends, could notably limit the 23-year-old's snap count for 2019. Smythe will likely have to beat of Nick O'Leary and Clive Walford for what could be one roster spot.
Smythe is one of two rookie tight ends joining the Dolphins in 2018, along with red-zone weapon Mike Gesicki. With two draft picks spent on tight ends, Miami hopes to put an end to their series of failed experiments at the position since losing Charles Clay in 2015. One of the draft's top blocking specialists, Smythe fills a very different need at the position than Gesicki. Despite some praise for his route-running, Smythe caught only 28 passes during his college career. The fourth-rounder is set to compete with MarQueis Gray and Gavin Escobar for snaps at the in-line position, where Miami hopes he'll make a difference in run blocking and pass protection.

No longer top receiving option
TEMiami Dolphins
March 7, 2024
Smythe, who operated as the Dolphins' clear pass-catching option at tight end in 2023, has been displaced from that role by the signing of Jonnu Smith on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Smythe's modest total of 366 receiving yards led all Dolphins tight ends last season and also served as his career high. However, Smith brings even more pass-catching pedigree to the table. He's coming off having recorded a career-best 50 catches and 582 receiving yards for the Falcons last season, and Schefter notes it seems Smythe will now be slotting into a hybrid role that also features a fair share of pass and run blocking.
