Our mock draft series on Tuesdays on our radio show, RotoWire Fantasy Sports Today, continued this week with a 10-team, 23-round AL-only mock. Once again, 14 hitters (including two catchers) and 9 pitchers were required.
The hitting pool is even grimmer in the AL, which makes sense, given that there are two fewer teams, and with fewer pinch-hit opportunities, AL teams tend to carry fewer hitters on the roster - an odd paradox of the DH rule. Outfield in particular looks especially sketchy. One of the draft teams in the chat room commented about what hell it was trying to find an outfielder in the 21st round who was projected to get a decent amount of playing time.
Looking at my team, I regret taking Shin-Soo Choo at 3.3 instead of Desmond Jennings. If I could do it over again, I'd rather gamble on Jennings' upside.
I might also have taken a starting pitcher earlier, and taken more of them in the middle rounds. Taking Jemile Weeks at 6.3 clearly ended up being a mistake - there were other decent second basemen in the pool at the time, and it cost me Michael Pineda and Matt Moore - Moore in particular hurt. I would have preferred to go Moore in the sixth and Darvish in the seventh in retrospect. The second base position seems a lot deeper than the shortstop pool in the AL, for what it's worth.
