Izturis announced his retirement from baseball Friday, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.
ANALYSIS
Izturis signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays this offseason in hopes of landing a utility job, but he dealt with a shoulder injury during camp and was on the outside looking in at a roster spot, so he decided to call it a career. Izturis will finish his career with a .269 batting average, 39 home runs, 334 RBI, and 93 stolen bases in 909 games over 11 seasons.

Over the past two seasons, few position players have been stuck as hard by the injury bug as Izturis. In 2014, Izturis played in just 11 games, going 10-for-35 before suffering a season-ending injury. In 2015, Izturis injured his groin during spring training and lost his starting spot to Devon Travis. In mid-May, he was in the midst of a rehab assignment at High-A Dunedin, playing in his fifth game where he dove for a ball and injured his shoulder in the process. The injury cost him the remainder of the season and effectively ended his tenure with the Blue Jays. This offseason, the team declined the $3 million club option they held. Izturis is now 35 years old and a free agent, having played 11 major league games in the past two seasons. With that in mind, the once productive utility infielder could have value to a team willing to take a flyer on him, but the career .269 hitter has a lengthy list of injuries that could deter many a team.
