Parts ways with O's
Hernandez (elbow) opted out of his minor-league contract with the Orioles on Monday and became a free agent, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After joining the Orioles for camp as a non-roster invitee, Hernandez appeared to be tracking toward a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but an elbow injury suffered two weeks ago scuttled those plans. Though Hernandez has since resumed throwing off a mound, he apparently wasn't interested in sticking around at the Orioles' alternate training site to complete his rehab program. Once healthy, Hernandez could look to rejoin the Orioles if no better offers emerge for the 2010 American League Cy Young winner.

Hernandez impressed in spring training with Atlanta in 2020, but he opted out of the season due to COVID-19 concerns. While Hernandez was dominant in the prime of his career, he's been roughly a replacement-level starter over his past three seasons and could be an unreliable fantasy option over a full year. The right-hander made just 15 starts during the final season of his 15-year run with the Mariners in 2019, posting a career-worst 6.40 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 71.2 innings. His 5.02 SIERA was slightly more encouraging, but he also had a lackluster 17.5 K% and 40.5% hard-hit rate that would have ranked 16th-worst among starters if he had qualified. The veteran has had a legendary career and has expressed interest in playing in 2021, but his decreased fastball velocity and struggles with strikeouts are cause for concern until we see proof that his skills have bounced back in some way.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Decision should have domino effect
Hernandez's decision to sit out the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns, which his agent Wilfredo Polidor announced via his Twitter account Saturday night, opens the door for either Sean Newcomb or Kyle Wright to enter the starting rotation, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hernandez banked on himself this past offseason, signing a minor-league contract with the Braves with an invitation to spring training. The 34-year-old then proceeded to make very good use of his Grapefruit League opportunity, posting a 1.98 ERA over 13.2 frames across four starts. However, the 34-year-old's health-related concerns trump what appeared to be a legitimate chance at the No. 5 spot in the rotation.
