Rest-of-Season Projections
Announces retirement
Boesch announced Tuesday that he has retired from professional baseball, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old wasn't able to pick up a spring-training invite from any team after he batted just .221/.266/.345 over 158 plate appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox organization last season. Prior to that, Boesch had been a respectable platoon outfielder in the big leagues in stints with the Tigers, Yankees, Angels and Reds. Over parts of six seasons in the majors, Boesch hit .250 and amassed 48 homers, good for a career wRC+ of 89.

The Reds have a bad habit of awarding Opening Day roster spots on small sample spring training performance, only to see those players fall apart once the season begins. They had four such non-roster players win spots in 2015, including Boesch, which should have been their first sign that they were nowhere ready to contend in the loaded NL Central. Boesch was badly exposed against big-league pitching, striking out 30 times in 94 plate appearances. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster by the Reds in November and might not get another chance in the bigs.
