Rest-of-Season Projections
Auditioning for teams
Shields remains focused on continuing his playing career and recently completed throwing sessions in front of representatives from the Tigers, Indians and Rangers, Jon Paul Morosi of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With 30-plus starts in all but one season since 2007, Shields could have some appeal to clubs as experienced, durable rotation depth, but that's about all he has working in his favor at this stage of his career. The 37-year-old hasn't posted a sub-4.00 ERA since 2015 and has seen his strikeout rate fall precipitously along with his velocity over the subsequent three years. Unless it's reported that he's added a few ticks to his heater in his workouts, there's little reason to be bullish about Shields' prospects should he resurface in the big leagues at any point in 2019.

In a rebuilding year, the White Sox trotted Shields out there 34 times (33 starts). His 5.09 FIP was the third-worst among qualified starters, but eat innings he did. Shields exceeded 200 frames for the 10th time in his career and for the first time since 2015, and that volume alone actually gave Shields some value in certain H2H points formats. The skills have eroded greatly over the past several years; Shields' K-BB rate has fallen below 10% in each of the past three seasons while his HR/9 rates have ranged from 1.50 to 2.08 in that time. He is averaging a mere six wins per season over the past three years, and what was Shields' one above-average pitch, his curveball, saw a big decline in quality last season. Shields' team option was predictably declined, and while another rebuilding team may bring him aboard to start, it's difficult to see the results improving much at all.
