Cut loose by Nationals
Raburn was released by the Nationals on Saturday, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
A brutal showing in spring training (.080/.179/.080 across 28 plate appearances) confirmed Raburn wouldn't break camp with the Nationals, so the team decided to free the veteran up to pursue other opportunities. He'll look to catch on elsewhere, though his time as a viable platoon bat in the outfield may well be up.

It remains to be seen whether Raburn, now entering his age-37 season, can still be a viable platoon bat in the outfield. He was used sparingly during his time with Washington last season and missed the end of the year with a trapezius strain. When on the field, Raburn struck out at a nightmarish 36.2 percent clip and walked just 5.8 percent of the time. He hit .185 with a .181 wOBA against left-handed pitching, but it was a minute sample (28 plate appearances). His numbers against lefties in 2016 were significantly better (.835 OPS, .357 wOBA) although that was his lone season in Colorado. The Nats brought Raburn back on a minor-league deal and will give him a chance to compete for a roster spot in spring training. If he fails to make the cut, the team could free him up to explore other opportunities. Either way, Raburn seems highly unlikely to join the mixed-league conversation at any point in 2018.
