Moves into coaching role
Rodriguez joined the Phillies as a player development instructor in early March, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The move ends Rodriguez's playing career, though he'd already faded from view, playing just four games in 2020 and none in 2021. He'll call it quits after spending parts of 13 seasons in the majors, hitting .226/.301/.379 with 81 career homers while appearing everywhere except catcher.

After 12 seasons in the big leagues, Rodriguez helps fill a team's veteran presence quota and can cover any position defensively, but he doesn't offer a whole lot else. He spent most of the season on the Phillies' major-league roster after getting his contract selected in late April, hitting .223/.348/.375. That line was good for a 94 wRC+, not a great figure but still far better than the 54 and 64 marks he posted in the previous two seasons. If Rodriguez can remain at a similar level, he'll deserve a bench role due to his defensive flexibility. He's unlikely to do much for fantasy owners even if injuries open up more playing time, however, and he'll be 35 years old for most of the season, so a step back wouldn't be a surprise. If that step back is sizable, it could send Rodriguez out of the league, which is probably a more likely outcome than him suddenly becoming a fantasy asset.
