Rest-of-Season Projections
Hitless with new team
Cabrera lined out in his pinch-hit appearance Wednesday in the Reds' 5-4 loss to the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
The Reds claimed Cabrera off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Aug. 27 with the hope that he could become a pinch-hitting specialist off the bench, but he's failed to make any sort of impact in that capacity. The 35-year-old is still searching for his first hit as a member of the Reds, as he's off to an 0-for-18 start. He hasn't made up for the lack of hits by showing quality plate discipline, either; he's reached base only twice via a walk and a hit by pitch.

After slashing 323/.404/.565 for the Nationals down the stretch in 2019, Cabrera re-upped with Washington on a one-year deal, ostensibly to be a utility infielder. However, when Carter Kieboom struggled, Ryan Zimmerman opted out and Starlin Castro fractured his wrist, Cabrera was a regular, playing both corner infield spots and designated hitter. His underlying metrics remained on par with recent seasons as his low average was driven by a drop in line-drive rate. Despite a seemingly stable skill set, at 35 years old, the decline is imminent. For the first time in his career, Cabrera doesn't have middle-infield eligibility, but qualifying at both first and third base helps. Cabrera's days of being a regular are likely over, though his ability to fill in all around the infield should help maintain a decent amount of playing time. Cabrera is no longer a mixed-league option unless he's slated for DH duties.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Open to MLB return
Cabrera is open to returning to MLB but only "under the right circumstances," according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
ANALYSIS
Cabrera didn't sign a contract in the offseason and while there's interest in his services, he is not going to sign with the first franchise that knocks on his door. In fact, he has already rejected one approach from a major-league franchise. A veteran who has earned more than $60 million throughout his MLB career, Cabrera can afford to be selective about the opportunities that do and don't tempt him since the offers he's likely to receive won't significantly change his finances.
