Rest-of-Season Projections
Officially retiring
Bautista will sign a one-day contract with the Blue Jays on Friday before officially retiring, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Bautista is 42 and hasn't played anywhere since 2018, but his retirement hasn't been official until now. He played 15 seasons and for eight different teams, but his best years by far came during his 10 years in Toronto, a stretch which saw him bat .253/.372/.506, make six straight All-Star teams and on four occasions finish in the top 10 in American League MVP voting.

Bautista did not play in affiliated baseball last year but is hoping to return to MLB in 2020, if the right opportunity presents itself. He was still above league average at the plate the last time we saw him, though barely, and his K-rate was all the way up at 27.8% after sitting in the mid-to-high teens during his prime years with Toronto. Now 39 years old, Bautista would have to DH for a big-league club, and he'd have to DH close to full time to return to any sort of fantasy relevance. Even with regular at-bats, Bautista would be a tough sell in batting average leagues; his ability to draw free passes has held up with age, propping up his OBP, but Bautista's BA cratered to around the Mendoza Line in 2017-18 with the jump in strikeouts.
