Rest-of-Season Projections
Announces retirement Monday
Bailey (shoulder) announced his retirement from playing professional baseball Monday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
A recurring shoulder issue kept Bailey from being active for much of the 2017 season, as he appeared in just four games (4.0 innings) with the Angels. While his playing career has come to an end, Bailey will remain active in the sport as he's joining the Angels' coaching staff. Bailey will end his eight-season career with a 3.12 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 265 games (274.1 innings).

Things didn't quite go as planned for Bailey in 2017, as the veteran right-hander tossed just four major-league innings all season due to recurring shoulder issues. He broke camp as part of the team's closer committee with Cam Bedrosian, but appeared in just three games (tossing three perfect frames) and didn't get an opportunity to close prior to landing on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation in early April. The 33-year-old finally returned to action in August, but another shoulder issue sent him right back to the DL after just one appearance. Bailey's fastball velocity continued to drop last season, and even if we chalk that up to his shoulder issues, it has gradually declined each year since 2013 (the last season he posted a K/9 above 9.0). The free agent is intent on pitching again in 2018, but Bailey will be a long shot to break camp with any sort of prominent role.
