LaPorta and Jack Cust were released by the Orioles on Friday, Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
LaPorta was a long shot to crack the roster, even more so once the Orioles signed Nelson Cruz. Once a promising prospect, LaPorta is 29 and facing a future that may not include major league baseball.

LaPorta failed to impress in spring training and was sent back to Triple-A Columbus as a result. He had some success there before getting regular playing time down the stretch for the Indians. He didn't make much of an impression in his time with the Tribe, hitting .241 with one homer in 60 plate appearances. LaPorta is out of minor league options and had offseason hip surgery that will require four months of rehab, so he might miss the start of spring training as a result. A change of scenery might do him some good as his future in Cleveland is far from certain.

LaPorta (hip) is expected to head to Triple-A Columbus in a week or two after completing his rehab in extended spring training, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. "He's still coming back from the hip procedure and he had a minor setback with a wrist injury," said Ross Atkins, Indians director of player development, "but he's been playing games in extended spring training and we'll send him to Columbus in the next week or so."
