Closer Watch

Pirates - Ryan Reid entered the seventh inning with the Pirates leading the Brewers by six runs, and got his first save of the season by pitching a shutout final three innings of Friday's game. This will not affect Jason Frili's status as the Pirates closer, and this may be Reid's only save of the season.

Nationals - Drew Storen got his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Mets. The save was the first for Storen since May 17, and only happened because the Nationals normal closer, Rafael Soriano, had pitched the previous three games so he was unavailable. This will be a sign of the Nationals picking order if their normal closer goes down with an injury as the team's other candidate, Tyler Clippard, pitched the eighth inning Friday.

Orioles - Tommy Hunter pitched two innings of shutout ball Friday when he earned his second save of the season for the Orioles. Jim Johnson, the team's normal closer, had pitched three out of the last four days, and was given the night off by manager Buck Showalter. Hunter's previous save was in April and was when he threw the final three innings of a game the Orioles won by five. Johnson hasn't been lights out as of late, so if Showalter is to make a change it would seem that Hunter may be at the top of his list.

Red Sox - Koji Uehara pitched a perfect ninth Friday night for the third night in a row to earn his third save in three days. Since taking over as the Red Sox closer Uehara has been terrific, and unless he starts to fall apart should be picked up in every league.

Recommended Pickup

Mike Aviles - It usually is pretty hard to tell recommend a utility player that's OPS is not even over .700, but Aviles has been hot, and can provide depth at multiple positions. Have played mostly at shortstop in 2013, Aviles has also seen time at second base, third base, left field and one appearance in right. In certain formats this means that Aviles could backup four positions, and in most he will be eligible in at two, short and third. Besides for providing depth Aviles has been hitting well the past week, with a five for 10 performance in Friday's doubleheader that included three runs, two RBI's, and a stolen base all in one day. Aviles may not be a long term option for a lot of teams out there right now, but in the theory get them while they're hot, he should be seriously considered for teams that are struggling at one of the positions that he is eligible at.
