ANALYSIS
The Nationals needed a 40-man spot for top prospect Lucas Giolito, who was called up to make his MLB debut Tuesday against the Mets. Jordan had Tommy John surgery in late May, ruling him out for the rest of the season while also putting his 2017 availability into questions.

2014
For the third straight year, Jordan bounced between the minor leagues and the Nationals' staff, but despite an apparently successful season at Triple-A he might be further away from winning a regular spot in the rotation than ever before. His impressive ERA and WHIP disguised a declining strikeout rate, and his 5.3 K/9 at Syracuse isn't going to land him on any sleeper lists. At his best, the 26-year-old right-hander pounds the bottom of the strike zone with a fastball that can creep into the low-90s along with a slider and changeup, but the profile is more that of an extra arm than a staff stalwart, and his best chance at a big-league job might come from the organization moving him to the bullpen full-time, where his fringy fastball might gain a bit of velocity. The Nats have gotten value out of similar pitchers, such as Craig Stammen, in the past, but it still leaves Jordan with a very low ceiling.
Jordan had a spirited duel with Tanner Roark last year in spring training over who would be the eventual fifth starter for the Nationals, but that proved to be the highlight of the season for him. After a handful of rough big league starts and declining radar gun readings in April he was sent back to Triple-A, only to come down with elbow soreness that eventually required surgery to remove bone chips, not unheard of for someone three years removed from Tommy John surgery. When he's healthy, the 26-year-old right-hander pounds the bottom of the strike zone with a low-90s fastball, sharp slider, and effective changeup, and with two-fifths of the Nats' current rotation not under contract past 2015, there's plenty of room in the organization's future plans for an arm like Jordan's. He'll most likely need to re-establish himself at Triple-A, but he's a sleeper if injuries or trades open up a spot for him.
After starting the season at High-A, Jordan put together an incredible display of control that took him straight through to a second-half trial with the Nationals. The Doug Fister trade likely locks him out of any shot at a rotation spot to begin 2014, but it also provides him with an excellent role model for the type of pitcher he'll need to become to have sustained success in the majors. If Jordan can continue to generate weak contact at Triple-A, he'll cement his spot in Washington's future plans.
