March 17, 2017
The Orioles released Ondrusek (elbow) Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander recently had a scheduled visit with Dr. James Andrew to examine his elbow, and this transaction could have something to do with the injury. Now a free agent, Ondrusek may need plenty of time to heal before he's able to secure a spot with a new club.

Ondrusek's season was ruined by a shoulder injury that required a trip to the DL and made him far less effective when he returned -- he gave up 10 runs over 9.2 innings after his activation, including a five-run disaster that concluded his season on September 14. The paradox for Ondrusek is that his strikeout rate actually improved and he threw just about as hard as the year before, but he was felled by a relapse of poor control and a whopping .379 BABIP. Ondrusek signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal to play in Japan with the Yakult Swallows in 2015. At age 29, he could return to MLB if he revives his career overseas.
Even as Ondrusek's skills improved in 2013, his luck regression canceled a chance for him to turn in a good season. He was able to cut his sky-high walk rate nearly in half, but was still thwarted by the long ball, giving up eight homers in 55 innings. Ondrusek enters 2014 without a guaranteed roster spot, let alone a pivotal role in the Reds' bullpen.
It may not show up in his ERA, but Ondrusek's mediocre command has started to come back to haunt him. He allowed a whopping 5.10 BB/9 in 2012 to go along with eight homers in 54.2 innings pitched. By the end of the season he had been surpassed not just by Jonathan Broxton and Jose Arredondo among Reds right-handed relievers, but also by rookie J.J. Hoover, who stayed up with the big club while Ondrusek was sent down in late August when the Reds needed the roster spot. Ondrusek could still end up in the set-up picture, but at this point he's well down the totem pole and will have to earn his major league roster spot in spring training.
Ondrusek worked his way into pitching in more high-leveraged roles in 2011 with mixed results, starting strong before a string of bad outings in July. His mediocre strikeout rate will prevent him from becoming an elite reliever - at this point, he doesn't appear to have closer-worthy skills.
Ondrusek emerged as a useful middle reliever for the Reds over the middle of the summer last season, at one point carrying a 22-inning scoreless streak. His strikeout rate hasn't quite caught up to his 93 mph fastball, but that occasionally happens with pitchers in their first exposure to major league hitting. Ondrusek isn't a candidate to close, but with another couple solid seasons under his belt he might work into that picture.
Though Ondrusek powered through three minor league levels as a reliever and posted good ERA's, his strikeout rate has never fully matched how hard he throws. He got hit around pretty hard in the Arizona Fall League. The Reds added him to their 40-man roster in November, and he'll spend 2010 in Louisville trying to harness his stuff.
