Pitching for his third organization in as many seasons, Dominguez remained an enigma. With a blistering fastball (average: 96.1 mph), hard slider and occasional changeup, Dominguez has an arsenal befitting a quality late-inning reliever. What he possesses in raw talent, he lacks in control, however, and that recurring theme has kept him on the Triple-A-to-MLB shuttle since he broke through with the Dodgers in 2013. It's easy to see why organizations continue to take the chance on the hard-throwing righty, but until he can locate his offerings more consistently to chip away at the walk rate (career 10.3 percent walk rate) and keep the ball in the year more consistently (1.13 HR/9), he'll continue to be a project in middle relief.
Dominguez continues to flash promise with a high-90s fastball and biting slider, but the Dodgers gave him just five appearances in the big leagues last season while trying to find answers in their relief corps. Just 24 years old, he has the raw ability to become a shutdown reliever in the late innings, but Dominguez hasn't been able to put it all together just yet. One of the first trades made by new President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman sent Dominguez and Greg Harris to the Rays in exchange for veteran Joel Peralta. The Rays have a good track record of finding quality arms on the cheap and maximing their value. He may begin 2015 at Triple-A Durham, but Dominguez should get an opportunity in Tampa Bay at some point this season. Keep an eye on his walk rate, as he's been unable to maintain a sub-3.0 BB/9 for any prolonged stretch since rookie ball in 2011.
A September quad injury cut his season short, but Dominguez flashed enough to where we can consider him a future late-inning option. He averaged a whopping 98.5 mph on his fastball in 8.1 innings at the big league level, though the four strikeouts were disappointing. Prior to being recalled, Dominguez had posted an impressive 40:13 K:BB in 25.1 minor league innings. If he can make improvements in his control and develop a second pitch, Dominguez could see significant time in the big leagues in 2014.
