Weekly Rankings: Week 8 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 8 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update complete (6:30 a.m. PT)

Bye Week - Buffalo, Jacksonville, Philadelphia and Washington.

Detroit and Kansas City play at 9:30 ET in London.

Here are our rankings for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 10:00 pm PT - it used to be 8:00, but life intervenes, and I coach two soccer practices on Tuesdays now. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion

Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?".

Quarterback

1.Tom Brady NE vs. Mia
2.Philip Rivers SD at Bal
Note: Rivers has 123 passing attempts over the last two weeks. His fourth quarter against the Raiders salvaged an otherwise dismal game for him.
3.Carson Palmer ARZ at Cle
4.Matt Ryan ATL vs. TB
Note: Pretty poor against the Titans, and not great against the Saints the week before. But he's facing the Bucs this week, who just got shredded by Kirk Cousins.
5.Andy Dalton CIN at Pit
6.Drew Brees NO vs. NYG
7.*Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. Cin
Note: (Knee) Listed atop the Steelers'depth chart and will not have any limitations in practice this week. Landry Jones will be the backup. Full practice Wednesday. ***Officially listed as probable.***
8.Cam Newton CAR vs. Ind
Note: Coming off his worst game on Sunday night, but facing the Colts should prove to be an easier test.
9.Aaron Rodgers GB at Den
10.Peyton Manning DEN vs. GB
11.Andrew Luck IND at Car
Note: Luck could struggle again the next two weeks, with games at Carolina and at home against Denver before the Colts' bye in Week 9.
12.Joe Flacco BAL vs. SD
Note: Averaging less than 6.5 yards per attempt over the last four games.
13.Ryan Tannehill MIA at NE
Note: Ridiculously efficient in the win over Houston - what can he do against a tougher (but not quite elite) defense Thursday night in New England?
14.Alex Smith KC vs. Det
Note: Alex Smith vs. the Lions' pass defense is the 'resistible force' vs. the 'movable object.'
15.Eli Manning NYG at NO
16.Matthew Stafford DET at KC
Note: Stafford will be operating under a new offensive coordinator in Jim Bob Cooter - can he install a new offense midseason, or will that happen after the London game and subsequent bye week? Meanwhile, x-rays on his injured left (non-throwing) hand turned up negative.
17.Russell Wilson SEA at Dal
Note: The YPA was great against the Niners (9.8 yards), but because the Seahawks were never challenged by the Niners' putrid offense, Wilson's fantasy output (235 yards, 1 TD/2INT) was disappointing.
18.Ryan Fitzpatrick NYJ at Oak
19.Jameis Winston TB at Atl
20.Nick Foles STL vs. SF
21.Teddy Bridgewater MIN at Chi
22.Jay Cutler CHI vs. Min
23.*Brian Hoyer HOU vs. Ten
Note: Ryan Mallett was released by the Texans, who will likely sign Tyler Yates to be Hoyer's backup.
24.*Zach Mettenberger TEN at Hou
Note: ***Will get another start this week.***
25.Derek Carr OAK vs. NYJ
Note: Carr has had big games against the Ravens, Browns and Chargers this year, but you should expect this game to be more like his output against the Broncos three weeks ago.
26.*Josh McCown CLE vs. Ari
Note: McCown suffered a shoulder injury late in the loss to the Rams and is day-to-day. If he's physically capable of playing he will still start. ***Game-time decision, but NFL.com's Ian Rapoport suggests that McCown will play.***
27.Matt Cassel DAL vs. Sea
28.Colin Kaepernick SF at StL
29.*Johnny Manziel CLE vs. Ari
Note: Listed in case McCown can't play. Saw first-team reps on Wednesday. He's also awaiting news on whether he violated the league's personal conduct policy.
30.*Marcus Mariota TEN at Hou
Note: The Titans will re-evaluate Mariota's knee Tuesday. They are optimistic about him returning to practice. Limited practice Wednesday and Thursday, though he 'did better' on Thursday. ***Officially ruled out again this week.***

Running Backs

1.Le'Veon Bell PIT vs. Cin
Note: DeAngelo Williams took over some of the short-yardage duties against the Chiefs, but that might not remain a permanent condition.
2.Devonta Freeman ATL vs. TB
3.Todd Gurley STL vs. SF
4.Lamar Miller MIA at NE
5.Mark Ingram NO vs. NYG
6.Doug Martin TB at Atl
7.*Adrian Peterson MIN at Chi
Note: Sat out practice Thursday to tend to hip, ankle and finger injuries. ***Full practice Friday, listed as probable.***
8.Chris Johnson ARZ at Cle
9.Justin Forsett BAL vs. SD
10.*Marshawn Lynch SEA at Dal
Note: ***(Hamstring) Listed as probable.***
11.Jonathan Stewart CAR vs. Ind
Note: Stewart's 125-yard effort was overshadowed by vulture-back Mike Tolbert's two touchdowns and Cam's rushing touchdown.
12.Matt Forte CHI vs. Min
13.*Chris Ivory NYJ at Oak
Note: Dealing with a tight hamstring. ***Full practice all week, listed as probable.***
14.Jeremy Hill CIN at Pit
15.Danny Woodhead SD at Bal
16.Latavius Murray OAK vs. NYJ
17.Giovani Bernard CIN at Pit
18.*Ronnie Hillman DEN vs. GB
Note: Hillman will get first-team reps in practice this week.
19.*Darren McFadden DAL vs. Sea
Note: McFadden looked explosive against the Giants after Joseph Randle got hurt. Randle had two good runs before that as the starter. Christine Michael didn't get much action. Coach Jason Garrett wouldn't commit to McFadden starting, but owner Jerry Jones said that he would start. Officially named the starter.
20.*Eddie Lacy GB at Den
Note: My guess is that the bye week will do a lot of good for Lacy, and I like him better than Starks this week.
21.*Dion Lewis NE vs. Mia
Note: (Abdomen) Limited participant Monday and Tuesday after sitting out the win over the Jets. Expected to play Thursday night.
22.Alfred Blue HOU vs. Ten
23.Frank Gore IND at Car
24.*Charcandrick West KC vs. Det
Note: ***(Pectoral) Listed as active.***
25.LeGarrette Blount NE vs. Mia
Note: Despite Dion Lewis being inactive, Blount was on the field for only eight snaps, as the Pats decided to eschew the running game almost entirely.
26.Rashad Jennings NYG at NO
27.Duke Johnson CLE vs. Ari
28.*Reggie Bush SF at StL
Note: ***Big chance to get a lot of work with Hyde out - can he stay on the field himself, however? Probably will share carries with Mike Davis.***
29.*Andre Ellington ARZ at Cle
Note: ***Purportedly will have his role increased this week - I'm somewhat skeptical.***
30.*C.J. Anderson DEN vs. GB
Note: Appears to be behind Hillman in the pecking order, if practice reps are any indication.
31.Ameer Abdullah DET at KC
Note: On one hand, Abdullah ran well (8 carries, 43 yards), but on the other he wasn't targeted once in the passing game. Maybe the change in offensive coordinators will give him a chance to be used more frequently.
32.*Antonio Andrews TEN at Hou
Note: Had 10 carries for 57 yards, but doesn't play on passing downs. Could lose time when David Cobb ultimately returns.
33.Charles Sims TB at Atl
34.Theo Riddick DET at KC
35.Isaiah Crowell CLE vs. Ari
36.Javorius Allen BAL vs. SD
37.Shane Vereen NYG at NO
Note: Every Giants running back, including Orleans Darkwa, had at least four carries against the Cowboys, with none getting more than eight. This could be the worst committee of them all. Even worse, Vereen was barely used in the passing game for the second week in a row.
38.*Melvin Gordon SD at Bal
Note: ***(Ankle) Listed as probable, probably will get more work than last week, but less work than earlier in the season.***
39.Khiry Robinson NO vs. NYG
40.James White NE vs. Mia
Note: White was on the field for 44 snaps against the Jets with Lewis out.
41.Knile Davis KC vs. Det
42.C.J. Spiller NO vs. NYG
43.*Thomas Rawls SEA at Dal
Note: Dealing with a calf contusion. ***Listed as probable.***
44.*Christine Michael DAL vs. Sea
Note: Only had five carries despite Joseph Randle leaving with an oblique injury in the first quarter.
45.*Joique Bell DET at KC
Note: (Ankle) Limited practice Thursday. ***Active for Sunday morning's game.***
46.Dexter McCluster TEN at Hou
47.Jeremy Langford CHI vs. Min
48.*James Starks GB at Den

49.Zac Stacy NYJ at Oak
50.*Chris Polk HOU vs. Ten
Note: ***(Knee) Listed as probable.***
51.*Mike Davis SF at StL
Note: ***Part of a time-share with Reggie Bush with Carlos Hyde out.***
52.Branden Oliver SD at Bal
Note: Oliver had an eye-opening seven targets in the loss to the Raiders. I'm curious to see how they handle he and Melvin Gordon again this week. ***With Gordon listed as probable, my guess is that he's relegated to third back status again.***
53.Tevin Coleman ATL vs. TB
54.Jonas Gray MIA at NE
55.Jerick McKinnon MIN at Chi
56.David Johnson ARZ at Cle
57.Marcel Reece OAK vs. NYJ

61.Roy Helu OAK vs. NYJ
62.Mike Tolbert CAR vs. Ind

Note: (Ankle) Limited practice Thursday. ***Ruled out for Sunday.***
72.*David Cobb TEN at Hou
73.*Carlos Hyde SF at StL
Note: Hyde has been playing through a stress fracture in his foot. The Niners might expect to play in Week 8, but this can't bode well for him for the rest of the season, let alone this week. Did not practice Thursday. ***Officially out.***
74.*Joseph Randle DAL vs. Sea
Note: Left with an oblique injury that was similar to the one that sidelined him in the preseason. He could miss extended time with this iteration of the injury. Expected to sit out this week due to the injury, but also facing a possible suspension due to a violation of the league's personal conduct policy. ***Excused from the team, will be inactive Sunday.***
