Kendall Wright

With the Bears desperate for help at wide receiver after the loss of Alshon Jeffery, they signed Wright to a one-year contract after five seasons with the Titans. The depth chart should be an open competition, and Wright has as much of a chance as any player in the receiver's room to carve out significant playing time, especially in the slot. However, Wright hasn't been very productive since averaging 897 yards and four touchdowns during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. During both of his last two years in Tennessee, he failed to surpass 416 yards and was a healthy scratch multiple times in 2016. Should he resemble the reliable chain mover he was in 2013, when he hauled in 94 passes for 1,079 yards and two touchdowns, he could rebuild his stature in fantasy circles.

Wright started the year strong, with two 95-plus-yard games through Week 3, but knee and rib injuries cost him six full games and derailed the rest. Even when healthy, Wright is no more than a possession receiver - over his 55-game career he's had only three catches of 40-plus yards, and he's never been a threat in the red zone. At 5-10, 191, with decent (4.49 40) speed, Wright is a good athlete with reliable hands who's able to move the chains, but nothing more. The offense should be better with Marcus Mariota in Year 2, but Wright will have competition for targets. Tight end Delanie Walker is Mariota's first look, free-agent signee Rishard Matthews should command some opportunities and draftee Tajae Sharpe is poised to be a key cog in the offense. Meanwhile, veterans Andre Johnson and Harry Douglas are also on hand.

Coming off a 94-catch, 1,079-yard season in 2013, Wright appeared to disappoint last year with a 57-715 line. But he scored four more touchdowns on 46 fewer targets, and his per-play efficiency remained almost exactly the same. Part of the reduced volume can be attributed to a hand injury that cost Wright two games, but the team also hired a new coach in Ken Whisenhunt, a new offensive coordinator in Jason Michael and cycled through several quarterbacks. This year, Whisenhunt and Michael remain (given their track records, it's not likely that's a good thing for the Titans' passing game), and the team reloaded at quarterback with No. 2 overall pick Marcus Mariota. Tennessee also drafted Dorial Green-Beckham with the 40th overall pick and signed wideouts Hakeem Nicks and Harry Douglas, any of whom could siphon looks away from Wright and Justin Hunter. But Wright, drafted 20th overall in 2012, is the best bet to lead the team in targets. At 5-10, 191, Wright has merely average speed (4.49 40), and he's rarely going to make a big play or score touchdowns. His game is getting open in the short areas of the field and using his quickness and reliable hands to move the chains. As such, he's a better option in PPR than standard leagues.

It’s hard to see why the Titans used the 20th overall pick on a possession receiver in 2012, but that’s what Wright is. While he averaged only 7.8 YPT and 11.5 YPC, he did haul in 68 percent of the balls thrown his way (4th). At 5-10, 191, Wright is probably faster than his 4.61 Combine time, but his biggest assets are his quickness and reliable hands. He should resume his role as Jake Locker’s top target in 2014, but don’t expect much downfield or red-zone work. Wright had only one catch of 40-plus yards, and only 10 of Wright’s 139 targets were from inside the 20.

With Jake Locker and Matt Hasselbeck supplying some of the worst quarterbacking in the league, Wright finished with 9.8 YPC (dead last among 100-target WR) and 6.0 YPT (38th of 39). As a result, a team-high 104 targets yielded only 626 yards and four scores. Wright is small, compact and tough, and he's got good hands and excellent quickness. While his timed speed at the Combine (4.61 40) was poor, some scouts considered that an anomaly as he plays much faster in pads. Wright should see his share of work on shorter routes in the Tennessee offense, but Kenny Britt (if healthy and unsuspended) is the big-play and red-zone threat, and should something happen to Britt, rookie Justin Hunter, and not Wright is likely to fill Britt's shoes. Moreover, at press time, Nate Washington was still around to soak up some targets.

With Kenny Britt still working his way back from ACL surgery, the Titans used their first-round pick on Wright. At 5-10, 196, Wright isn’t big, but he’s strong and compact and has excellent quickness and burst. While he didn’t time out well at the NFL Combine, (4.61 40), most consider that an anomaly and peg him closer to 4.4, based on his in-pads speed in actual games. Wright has good hands, and is tough enough to make catches over the middle, though his route running needs some work. For now, he’s slated to be the team’s third receiver at best, behind Britt and Nate Washington. But Britt’s recovery isn’t complete (he actually had a setback and needed a second procedure). If second-year quarterback Jake Locker progresses, there could be some opportunities in the Tennessee passing game.
