Closer Watch

Blue Jays – Casey Janssen nailed down a save Sunday against the Yankees with a clean ninth and a strikeout. That wouldn't be news, except Janssen had surrendered five runs in his prior four outings, including a pair of runs to those very same Yanks the night before. It helps Janssen that the rest of the Toronto bullpen doesn't hold a lot of potential – second chair Aaron Loup has a 2.96 ERA, but just a 41:26 K:BB in 48.2 innings.

Nationals – Rafael Soriano pulled a full-on meltdown Monday in Miami. Often, when you give up a walk, and then a double, and then a single, and then a sac fly, and then a wild pitch, and then a triple, and then a hit batsman, it really comes back to bite you. In this case, it turned a 6-3 lead into a 7-4 walk-off loss. But hey, at least Jerry Blevins gave up the game-winning hit after Soriano was yanked. Nonetheless, Raffy's insulated from any threat (that is, Tyler Clippard) here, considering he entered the game with a 1.10 ERA.

Rangers – Neftali Feliz delivered a clean ninth Monday to improve to 2-for-2 in save chances, but he again failed to strike out a batter, leaving him with just a 4:4 K:BB in 12.1 innings this year. No one's really looming behind him, so Feliz has a pretty decent grip on this job.

Recommended Pickup
Kyle Hendricks, SP, CHC – A former eighth-round pick, Hendricks didn't garner much notice last season even after putting up a straight 2.00 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A as a 23-year-old. No top-100 lists for him. It's not that surprising – even with the incredible results, he posted just a 6.9 K/9, always a red flag to prospectors. But he also showed outstanding control – he's never averaged more than 2.0 BB/9 in a season, and last year made it 1.8 – and at some point, we have to admit that this guy is doing something right. No, he doesn't throw hard, but he has command of a cutter, slider, curve and change, and he uses all of them. It's been to good effect in the majors thus far – he's quietly posted a 2.33 ERA in his first three MLB starts, striking out a respectable-enough 14 against six walks in 19.1 innings. And it's worth noting that his K rate spiked in Triple-A this year – all the way to 8.5 K/9.

Other Recent Recommendations: Shane Victorino, Shane Greene, Chase Headley, David Phelps, Odrisamer Despaigne
