Henderson signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers on Sunday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

ANALYSIS
Henderson will return to the organization where he spent seven seasons from 2009 to 2015. The 35-year-old hasn't pitched since 2016, and the club is apparently signing him with a "player/coach" role in mind. His outlook for playing time and the minor-league level to which he'll be assigned remain unknown. He can be left off your fantasy radar.

Just more than two years removed from being a fairly reliable closer with the Brewers, Henderson had few options last offseason other than the minor league deal he ultimately signed with the Mets. His fall was due to a decline in performance and injuries, and it left him in a position where he'd have to win a roster spot out of spring training. The 34-year-old had his moments with the Mets -- and continued to strike out batters at a high clip (10.3 K/9) -- but he gave up too many free passes and home runs. Further, a drop in velocity suggests the pitcher may never regain the form he had before undergoing shoulder surgery at the end of the 2014 season. Now a member of the Cubs organization, Henderson is still good enough that he'll likely be able to compete for a major league roster spot, but he figures to be relegated mostly to lower-leverage situations if he manages to make the team out of spring training.

Henderson's 2015 season was a far cry from that of his 2013 campaign where he acted as the Brewers' closer. The 33-year-old began the season on the disabled list due to a nagging shoulder issue, and then spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Colorado Springs due to decreased effectiveness and lost velocity on his fastball. His minor-league performance wasn't good enough to even warrant a September callup or a spot on the 40-man roster. The Brewers parted ways with Henderson during the offseason, and he was quickly signed by the Mets to compete for a bullpen role.

Henderson was on track to open last season as the Brewers’ closer, but spring training struggles thanks to a sore shoulder led manager Ron Roenicke to hand Francisco Rodriguez the ninth-inning job to start the season, and Henderson never got it back. He never really made a run for the job, as he did not pitch after May 1 due to the sore shoulder. Henderson underwent surgery in October to clean up his shoulder, and should be healthy by spring training. Rodriguez is a free agent, so the Brewers are in need of a closer for 2015. Jonathan Broxton may be the favorite for the job, but Henderson has saved 31 games for the Brewers, so he may get a shot to compete for it.

Henderson quickly replaced John Axford as the Brewers’ closer and never looked back, recording 28 saves over the course of the season. Henderson’s calling card is his high-90s fastball, and though he gave up a few too many home runs, he also had an impressive 11.3 K/9 rate and did a good job keeping runners off base. Henderson will almost certainly open 2014 as the Brewers’ closer, and he will have no trouble holding onto the job if he is effective as he was last season.

It took Henderson eight years to reach the bigs, but his eighth one was by far his best yet. Henderson posted a 1.69 ERA and 56:22 K:BB in 48 innings as the closer with Triple-A Nashville, and followed that up by posting a respectable 3.52 ERA and 45:13 K:BB mark in 30.2 innings in the bigs. Henderson will head into 2013 in a late-inning role for the Brewers, and if John Axford struggles, he could be among the top options for the ninth-inning duties.
