Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
Almonte's performance across three callup periods with the Yankees in 2014 was nothing short of atrocious, as he recorded just one extra-base hit and failed to draw a single walk while striking out 14 times (38.9% K%) in 36 plate appearances. He had an OPS+ of 1. The Yankees designated the 25-year-old for assignment in September, but Almonte was still able to land a major league deal from Atlanta in the offseason, likely thanks to his respectable track record in the upper levels of the minors (.275/.333/.431 in two seasons at Triple-A). However, just because he signed a big-league deal doesn't mean Almonte is a lock to break camp as the club's fourth outfielder. Even if he were to win and job and playing time were to open up, Almonte would have to hit for a prolonged stretch to land on the NL-only radar.
Almonte got off to a hot start with the Yankees, going 7-for-13 to begin his time in the big leagues, and sustaining a .300 average through his first 17 games. He was never really able to bounce back from a mid-July ankle injury, and he only saw sporadic time in the outfield at the end of the season. The Yankees might choose to keep him around as a backup outfielder, and he may still have a little bit of upside with the bat should he find his way into some playing time, but he shouldn't be counted on to produce, as he faces a crowded path to playing time.
