Injuries marred Rutledge throughout 2017, as he suffered a hamstring injury in spring training that pushed him to the disabled list to begin the season and cost him most of April. A hip injury in June sent him back to the DL, and it was later revealed that he was also dealing with concussion symptoms. He was eventually recalled from his rehab assignment in late July when problems with his hip persisted, and he underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery in August. At season's end, Rutledge had played in just 37 games, occasionally filling in for an injured Dustin Pedroia when he was healthy in the first half, but offering a very empty .224/.297/.262 line -- easily the worst he's produced in six years of limited duty as a big-league player. It's expected that he'll be healthy to begin spring training, where he'll end up having to compete for a roster spot with the Giants after signing with San Francisco in December.
