Closer Watch

Rays - Grant Balfour's taking a leave of absence from the closer's role, as Joe Maddon announced after Sunday's five-run implosion that Tampa's going to be switching to a committee approach. Though Balfour's blown just two of 11 opportunities, he owns an ERA of 6.46 and has almost as many walks (20) as strikeouts (21) on the year. While Balfour's figuring out how to get his act together, Jake McGee, Joel Peralta and Juan Oviedo (who was once upon a time a closer named Leo Nunez) will figure into the save mix. But it sounds like Maddon's intent is to simply bridge the gap to a point where Balfour can be relied upon as the full-time closer once more.

Mets - Jenrry Mejia blew the save Sunday, giving up a pair of runs while getting just one out, and though it was his first blown save, he's been tagged for runs in four consecutive appearances. That should open the door for Jeurys Familia to see a few more save opportunities, and the two of them could go back and forth in the role for a while until one can settle in.

Recommended Pickup
Kendrys Morales, 1B, MIN - While this comes with obvious disclaimers - Morales hasn't recently looked like the same slugger he was when he burst onto the scene in 2009 with a 34-homer season - you simply can't leave this guy on the wire. He's going to step into everyday DH duties for the Twins and probably get a few reps at first base as well, and he wouldn't be the first aging power hitter to surprisingly find his mojo in Minnesota (hi, Josh Willingham). Morales is slotting right into the lineup for the Twins on Monday, hitting sixth in his season debut. In that lineup, though, he could easily find his way into the middle of the order if he shows a live bat. And with Brian Dozier and Joe Mauer getting on base plenty at the top of the lineup, RBI opportunities will be had.

Other Recent Recommendations: Danny Santana, Collin McHugh, Eddie Butler, Joba Chamberlain, Brock Holt
