The Pirates released Siegrist (suspension) last week, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
After failing to crack the Pirates' Opening Day roster, Siegrist refused a minor-league assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis, prompting the organization to suspend him in early April. The lefty reliever never budged from his refusal to report to the minors, ultimately sitting out the entire 2018 campaign. Pittsburgh will now cut ways with Siegrist, who shouldn't have trouble securing a minor-league deal with another organization, provided he's still interested in continuing his career. The 29-year-old was a productive big-league setup man as recently as 2016, when he posted a 2.77 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 66:26 K:BB and 17 holds across 67 appearances with the Cardinals.

Yet again, Siegrist proved to be a tremendous asset in the Cardinals' bullpen. His usage went down to 67 games (61.2 innings) from 2015's outrageous showing of 81 games (74.2 innings). He was just as efficient and notched a 26.6 percent strikeout rate and continued to show reverse splits. However, for the second straight year, he decreased his opponents' batting average against lefties, as they hit .221 with Siegrist on the mound, down from .278 in 2015. He continued his dominance of righties (.178/.265/.367 line against). Unfortunately for Siegrist, not every aspect of his game trended in the right direction. Although command has never been his strength, his lack of accuracy finally caught up to him and resulted in 10 home runs, giving him a 1.46 HR/9. He also blew more saves (five) than he converted (three). Despite these blemishes, Siegrist will resume his job in the late innings, which should result in upwards of 15 holds for the third year in a row.
Forearm and shoulder issues limited Siegrist throughout 2014, but he held up to a massive workload last year and turned in outstanding results for St. Louis. The left-hander made a whopping 81 appearances, most in the majors, and notched 28 holds, third-most in the National League. Siegrist's troubles against same-handed pitching continued, but the reverse platoon split did not deter manager Mike Matheny from turning to Siegrist to pitch the ninth when regular closer Trevor Rosenthal was unavailable. Entering his age-26 season, Siegrist is locked in as the team's top lefty setup option, and while he is prone to occasional fits of control issues, he pitches enough and strikes out enough hitters to be relevant even outside of leagues that count holds.
A forearm injury cost Siegrist nearly half the season in 2014 and the same issue popped up again after the season, which partially explains why his numbers took such a nosedive from 2013. His xFIP in 2014 was only 4.14, up from 3.00 in 2013, so there was some bad luck that factored into his ugly 6.82 ERA in 2014. Some of that luck was an extremely low strand rate of 62.8% and a fairly high HR/FB rate of 12.2%. Assuming Siegrist can get healthy again, which is far from certain given that he has muscle tears throughout his left forearm and hand, he should be an important part of the Cardinals' bullpen in 2015 and could have some decent fantasy value. Even in his limited and not-so-pretty 30.1 innings in 2014, Siegrist was able to rack up 16 holds and 37 strikeouts. Should he turn in 60-plus healthy innings in 2015, he could very well be one of the better non-closer relief options in fantasy.
It wasn't until June that Siegrist got the call, but he never looked back after that. Adding to the long list of young, talented, hard-throwing Cardinals, Siegrist didn't allow a run until his 13th appearance of the season and only allowed two earned runs across 39.2 innings and 45 appearances for the Cardinals, good for a 0.45 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. While he's unlikely to repeat those numbers again, he does have the strikeout ability (50 in 39.2 innings) to be a very good setup man or even a closer. The one cause for concern is a slightly high walk rate, as Siegrist allowed 18 free passes last season, however, strikeout pitchers tend to be able to get away with a few more walks. Look for him to take on a bigger role in 2014 and possibly carve out a role as the Cardinals' eighth-inning man.
