Rockies 4 - Indians 3
- Jhoulys Chacin pitched 6.2 innings and allowed just 1 run on 2 hits and 6 walks. Things could have been much worse as the walks indicated. He was able to strikeout 7 batters and had a no-hitter through 5 innings. His performance had a Francisco Liriano no-no feeling to it.
- Mitch Talbot registered a quality start as he went 6.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. He walked 2 and struck out 2, which is on par with his 15/12 K/BB ratio over his last five starts. He also allowed a homer, which gives him 7 batters served in just his last four games.
- Seth Smith was 3-4 with 2 homers, 3 RBI, and 2 runs. Have you tried saying his name three times fast? It's really tough to do. He's batting .316/.370/.555 on the season.
- Jason Giambi hit DH and went 3-4 with a run. He should be a decent play in NL leagues, while the Rockies are in NL parks.
- W: Matt Belisle (5-2), L: Chris Perez (2-3), SV: Huston Street (22)
- HR: Seth Smith (7, 8)
- SB: Asdrubal Cabrera (12); CS: Jonthan Herrera (3)
Nationals 6 - Mariners 5
- Doug Fister tossed 8 innings of 1-run ball at the Nationals. Unfortunately, he took a no-decision after the Mariners bullpen imploded. He allowed just 3 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Fister has now gone at least 7 innings in 7 of his last 8 starts. He remains 3-8, despite his 3.34 ERA.
- Livan Hernadez lasted only 4 innings and gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits and 1 walk. Coming off of a complete game shutout with 6 strikeouts and no walks, this probably isn't what most of his owners expected, but that's the risk you run with the 36 year old righty.
- Brandon League & David Pauley combined to blow a 4 run lead in the bottom of the 9th. This was about as ugly as it gets. League allowed a run, but managed to get 2 outs, before Pauley took over and completed the meltdown. He was taken deep by Wilson Ramos for a 3-run walk-off homer.
- Ichiro Suzuki went 2-5 at the plate with his 19th stolen base. His batting average (.279) may not be what he or his owners are used to, but at least he's running.
- W: Todd Coffey (3-0), L: David Pauley (4-1), BSV: David Pauley (1)
- HR: Wilson Ramos (6)
- SB: Ichiro Suzuki (19), Franklin Gutierrez (2)
Pirates 9 - Orioles 3
- James McDonald needed 104 pitches to make it through 4.2 innings with 3 earned runs allowed. He took a no-decision in this inefficient start that included 4 walks, 7 hits, and 2 homers. McDonald has had better results lately, but his walk rate is still well over 4 BB/9.
- Jeremy Guthrie took the loss, his 9th on the season, after he allowed 6 runs (5 earned) in 6.1 innings. He staked the Pirates to a 3-run lead in the first inning and went from there. With 3 walks and 2 strikeouts, it was the first time all season that he had more walks than strikeouts.
- Josh Harrison went 2-4 with 2 runs to raise his batting line to .286/.298/.321. He's not Pedro Alvarez, but he's done a decent job filling in for him.
- Andrew McCutchen got a hit and walked 3 times to raise his OBP to .392. Stud.
- W: Chris Resop (3-2), L: Jeremy Guthrie (2-9)
- HR: J.J. Hardy (9), Adam Jones (11)
Padres 5 - Red Sox 4
- Mat Latos threw a season high 120 pitches, en route to pitching 5.2 innings and allowing 4 earned runs. Things could have been worse as he allowed 10 hits and walked 4 batters. He did strikeout 8, so there's that.
- Alfredo Aceves pitched 5 innings and also allowed 4 earned runs in a no-decision. He walked 6 batters to go with 4 strikeouts. He was filling in for the ill Josh Beckett.
- Anthony Rizzo grounded out for the game deciding RBI in the 7th inning. He came to bat against Daniel Bard with the bases loaded and got the job done, but failed to do serious damage. He's batting just .167/.333/.389.
- Kevin Youkilis went 4-5 with a double and RBI. The third baseman is batting .276/.393/.506 this season - pretty damn good considering how thin his position has become.
- David Ortiz stole a base. I didn't see it, therefore I don't believe it.
- W: Chad Qualls (4-3), L: Dan Wheeler (0-1), SV: Heath Bell (19)
- SB: Cameron Maybin (8), David Ortiz (1); CS: Jacoby Ellsbury (10)
Braves 5 - Blue Jays 1
- Mike Minor made his last start for the foreseeable future in the bigs. He pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball with 5 hits, 1 walk, and a season high 8 batters. Brandon Beachy & Tommy Hanson are expected back soon, thus Minor's demotion.
- Zach Stewart was pretty much awful as he gave up 5 earned runs in just 3.2 innings. He walked 3 and allowed 10 hits, one of which was a 2-run homer by Brian McCann. It was Stewart's second start of the season and first good Kyle Drabek impression.
- Jason Heyward went 2-4 with a RBI from the 2nd spot in the lineup. The only Braves starter without a hit in the game was, you guessed it, Dan Uggla. Even Mike Minor got a double.
- W: Mike Minor (1-2), L: Zach Stewart (0-1)
- HR: Brian McCann (12)
- CS: Jason Heyward (2)
Marlins 5 - Angels 2
- Javier Vazquez threw 5.1 shutout innings with no walks in a win. He allowed 10 hits, but let's focus on the positive here, considering there hasn't been much that has gone right for Vazquez this season. His ERA is now 6.37, guess that's the end of all the positive things I could say about him.
- Ervin Santana struck out 6 batters, walked 1, and allowed 2 earned runs in 5 innings. He took the loss as his record fell to 3-8.
- Torii Hunter, my favorite player, went 4-5 with a double, run, and RBI. The aging outfielder is hitting .242/.314/.374 this season. He's a decent bet to get close to 20 homers, but double digit steals might be a stretch.
- Hanley Ramirez was back in the lineup and went 2-4 with 2 runs and a stolen base. Logan Morrison called him out yesterday. I hear he's popular on the Tweeter.
- W: Javier Vazquez (4-7), L: Ervin Santana (3-8), SV: Leo Nunez (20)
- HR: Gaby Sanchez (13)
- SB: Howie Kendrick (6), Emilio Bonifacio (5), Hanley Ramirez (13)
Yankees vs. Reds was postponed due to the weather.
A's 7 - Mets 3
- Josh Outman pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) with 4 strikeouts. He worked with a lead the whole way and cruised to a victory, his third. Command has been a problem for him this season, but he only walked 2 batters in this start. He has now allowed just 1 earned run in his last 13 innings.
- Dillion Gee wasn't as sharp as he allowed 4 earned runs in just 4 innings with a season high 6 walks and season low 1 strikeout. He walked the first two batters of the game and never got back on track. It's Gee's first loss of the season.
- Jason Bay went 3-3 with a solo homer, 2 RBI, and a walk. The homer was his first extra-base hit in over a month, ouch. The Canadian is batting .236/.320/.322 on the season.
- Jemile Weeks went 1-3 with 3 runs, 2 walks, and 2 stolen bases. He'll be a decent source of speed, assuming he can continue to get on base at a decent clip.
- W: Josh Outman (3-1), L: Dillion Gee (7-1), SV: Grant Balfour (2)
- HR: Jason Bay (3)
- SB: Jemile Weeks (3, 4)
Rangers 5 - Astros 4
- Jordan Lyles held the Rangers to 3 runs over 7 innings with 6 strikeouts, but took a no-decision. He left the game in line for the win, but the Astros bullpen poo-pooed that (surprise, surprise). He didn't miss that many bats in the minors, but he now has 14 strikeouts in his last 12.2 innings.
- C.J. Wilson allowed 4 earned runs on 11 hits over his 6.2 innings, also in a no-decision. His strikeouts have undulated this season from highs like his 10 Ks in his last start to his 1 in the start before. In this one he had 4 strikeouts.
- The Astros 1-3 hitters (Jason Bourgeois, Michael Bourn, & Jeff Keppinger) all had three hits.
- Brett Wallace hit 7th, despite his team high .385 OBP. Want another head scratcher? In the 8th inning Brad Mills decided to empty out his bullpen by using four different pitchers to face 6 different batters. This was in a tied game, no less. This game went 11 innings, but I wish it had gone many more to expose how poorly Mills had planned for later innings.
- Mitch Moreland went 1-5 with a walk-off homer. He's hitting .294/.355/.489 and is a serviceable option for those that lost Albert Pujols.
- W: Yoshinori Tateyama (1-0), L: Enerio Del Rosario (0-2)
- HR: Josh Hamilton (6), Michael Young (4), Nelson Cruz (16), Mitch Moreland (10)
- SB: Michael Bourn (31, 32); CS: Jason Bourgeois (3), Jeff Keppinger (1)
White Sox 3 - Cubs 2
- Matt Garza took a no-decision after he pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. He walked 1 with 4 strikeouts. Garza's strikeouts have tapered off significantly since he started out the season with back-to-back months of more than 1 strikeout per inning.
- Mark Buehrle pitched 5.1 innings and also allowed 2 earned innings in a no-decision. After a rough April (5.12), he has now lowered his ERA to 3.73.
- Carlos Pena stayed hot with a solo homer. That's now 4 home runs in his last six games.
- Paul Konerko went 2-3 with a double, homer, and walk. That's 5 straight games with a homer.
- W: Jesse Crain (3-2), L: Jeff Samardzija (5-3), SV: Sergio Santos (13)
- HR: Carlos Pena (13), Paul Konerko (21)
Diamondbacks 7 - Royals 2
- Joe Saunders held the Royals to 2 runs over 7 innings for his 4th win. In typical fashion, he walked 3 and struck out 3. Not surprisingly, Saunders road ERA this season has been almost a full run lower than his home ERA.
- Luke Hochevar got knocked around for 5 earned runs in his 7 innings. He struck out 6 and walked just 1. He was doing alright, until he fell apart in the 7th inning with a 3-run inning. He's now 4-8 with a 4.97 ERA.
- Alex Gordon went 3-4 with a double, triple, homer, 2 RBI, and a run. Hitting leadoff seems to suit him just fine as he has a .354 OBP.
- Willy Mo Pena is back! He went yard with a solo shot in the 5th inning. He also struck out twice, which I'm sure we'll see plenty more of.
- W: Joe Saunders (4-7), L: Luke Hochevar (4-8)
- HR: Chris Young (15), Willy Mo Pena (1), Alex Gordon (9)
- CS: Chris Getz (3)
Brewers 5 - Rays 1
- Zack Greinke was on point as he struck out 10 batters in his 7 innings of 1-run ball. Forget his 4.77 ERA, his K/BB ratio is now 80/9, which is absurd.
- Jeremy Hellickson had a quality start as he pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. He walked 4 batters and struck out 3, which is in step with his less than stelar command this season.
- Casey Kotchman had 4 plate appearances and saw a total of 7 pitches. Against Greinke, maybe he was figuring, I might as well swing early, rather than fall behind in a bad count.
- Jonathan Lucroy went 3-4 with a run and is now batting .275/.319/.423.
- W: Zack Greinke (7-2), L: Jeremy Hellickson (7-6)
- HR: Yuniesky Betancourt (4)
Dodgers 6 - TIgers 1
- Chad Billingsley held the Tigers to 1 run over 5.1 innings on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. This is much better than his last two games where he allowed a total 13 earned runs in just 8.2 innings.
- Max Scherzer allowed 6 earned runs in 6 innings, in a loss. He had won three games in a row prior to this start. His ERA is now 4.61, after nearly two months of it hovering around 5.
- Andre Ethier went 1-5 with a 2-run homer. He's batting .268/.333/.437 this month.
- W: Chad Billingsley (6-6), L: Max Scherzer (9-3)
- HR: Andre Ethier (8)
- SB: Matt Kemp (22, 23)
Twins 9 - Giants 2
- Madison Bumgarner got blitzkrieged by the Twins. He gave up 8 earned runs and got only 1 out. Part of this has to fall on the manager as Bruce Bochy let him suffer out there. Vin Mazarro anyone?
- Carl Pavano was just the opposite as he pitched 8 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. He has a 1.64 ERA this month and has worked his ERA on the season close to 4, which is a big improvement from where it was in May.
- Joe Mauer went 2-5 with a double, RBI, and run. He along with all the other Twins position players had at least one hit in the game. Mauer is batting .188/.235/.250 since coming back.
- W: Carl Pavano (5-5), L: Madison Bumgarner (3-9)
- HR: Alexi Casilla (2), Eli Whiteside (2)
Phillies 10 - Cardinals 2
- Roy Halladay held the Cardinals to 1 run over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts, in a no-decision. Up until the 5th innings when Yadier Molina scored on a fielder's choice it was a scoreless game. Halladay has a 28/3 K/BB ratio this month.
- Kyle McClellan pitched 7 innings and allowed just 1 run with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts, also in a no-decision. He had a shutout going into the 7th, but a Ross Gload single scored Raul Ibanez to tie things up. McClellan hasn't had the best command this season as he has 39 strikeouts to 24 walks.
- Carlos Ruiz went 4-4 with a RBI, run, and walk. Chooch is batting .256/.370/.339 this season. That'll play in leagues that use OBP - which is inflated because he bats ahead of the pitcher.
- W: Michael Stutes (2-0), L: Trever Miller (0-1)
- CS: Ryan Theriot (4)
