Whiteside has decided to retire from active competition and take a job as a coach with the Giants, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
The 35-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Braves back in November, but it seems he soured on the idea of toiling in the minors for another year and will instead embark on a new journey. Whiteside will return to the Giants, with whom he spent the 2009-2012 seasons, after going 3-for-25 in eight games with the Cubs in 2014.

Whiteside spent almost all of 2012 in Triple-A since Hector Sanchez leaped over him in the depth chart, but he appeared in 12 games (14 plate appearances) in the majors. Known more as a defensive specialist, Whiteside hit .224/.296/.303 with one home run in 229 plate appearances in Triple-A and his wRC+ of 56 was his lowest since 2008. His inability to make consistent contact (12.8 percent career swinging-strike rate), has kept his career average below .220. Whiteside was claimed on waivers by the Rangers in December, and will open the year as the team's No. 3 catcher by working at Triple-A.
Whiteside saw more action than expected last year after Buster Posey went down with a season-ending injury, and he responded with a predictably poor .197/.264/.310 line, as the 32-year-old journeyman isn’t suited for more than about a start per week. The Giants have a few options at catcher even with Posey returning, so as a result, Whiteside re-signed on a minor league deal after being non-tendered. He’ll battle Hector Sanchez and Chris Stewart to enter the year as the team’s backup catcher.
Whiteside batted .238 with four home runs over 126 at-bats last year and enters 2011 in the same exact role – as the team's backup catcher. Don't expect much playing time with Buster Posey ahead of him on the depth chart.
Whiteside saw his first action in the majors since 2005 last season, posting a .228/.269/.339 line over 127 at-bats. Bengie Molina is likely to leave via free agency, but while Buster Posey isn’t ready for the full-time catching gig, expect San Francisco to address the position outside the organization, so Whiteside’s role moving forward is in question.
With the signing of Ramon Hernandez to a four-year deal before the season, the Orioles made it clear that Whiteside isn't the future of their organization at catcher, and at 26 he never will be. His best shot at making it to the big leagues is as a backup in 2006, though he'll likely spend most of the season in Triple-A.
It speaks volumes about the Orioles farm system that a .253 Double-A hitter is its best catching prospect. Whiteside did have a promising season in the Arizona Fall League, posting a .329 average with 20 RBI in 70 AB, and has more long-term upside than Geronimo Gil, but he shouldn’t see any time in the majors the next couple of seasons.
Whiteside showed some promise coming out of his 2002 rookie season combined at Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie only to regress at the plate in 2003. The organization is weak at catcher, so Whiteside has a chance to move up the ladder. In order to do that he'll have to do better than a .204 average, and certainly better than a .230 OBP.
