Bourgeois re-signed a minor league contract with the White Sox on Tuesday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
For the first time in the past nine years in 2016, the 35-year-old failed to make an appearance at the major-league level. He split his time in Triple-A last year between the Diamondbacks and White Sox, slashing .292/.333/.385 with 47 RBI and 19 stolen bases across 121 games. At this point in his career, the outfielder will simply provide organizational depth.

2016 marked the first time Bourgeois was unable to crack a major league roster for some time. He split time between the Triple-A affiliates of the Diamondbacks and the White Sox, compiling a solid .292/.333/.385 slash line thanks to 25 doubles and a high contact rate. Unfortunately, nothing happened at the major league level that allowed him to take his talents to the show, leading him to settle for a minor league contract with the White Sox prior to the 2017 season. Following the departure of Adam Eaton, there is a bit of an opening in Chicago's outfield, although it's likely that the White Sox would prefer to use their younger options to fill the void rather than a 35-year-old journeyman like Bourgeois. This scenario seems to point toward an organizational depth role once again.
Despite missing the first half of the season with a shoulder injury, Bourgeois managed to get 212 plate appearances with the Reds in 2015 — many of those from the leadoff spot in the order. Dusty Baker may be gone from Cincinnati, but his spirit remains in Bryan Price, who stubbornly clings to the notion that if a player is fast, he must bat leadoff regardless of his other hitting skills, including the ability to get on base. Like teammate Brennan Boesch, Bourgeois was outrighted off the Reds' 40-man roster in the offseason. He signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks in the offseason, but opportunities for big league playing time should be sparse for Bourgeois in 2016.
Bourgeois was one of the cast of thousands (OK, one of a handful) of left fielders the Reds used with poor results in 2014. He's a prototypical career Triple-A player; not able to hit with enough authority to take advantage of a decent batting eye and good speed. If he retains a 40-man roster spot through the offseason, Bourgeois will have a long shot to earn one of the team's final bench spots during spring training.
After being traded from the Astros to the Royals last spring, Bourgeois joined his new club as a fourth outfielder and right-handed bat off the bench. He was viewed more as a defensive replacement and pinch runner, but became expendable with the development of Jarrod Dyson whom the Royals viewed as a more long-term option. Bourgeois shuffled between Kansas City and Triple-A Omaha throughout the year and finished the season having appeared in just 30 games with just five stolen bases and a .258 average to show for it. Bourgeois signed with the Rays after being let go by the Royals in November, and he will likely be put to optimal use as a part-time player by manager Joe Maddon.
Bourgeois finished the 2011 season with a .294 batting average and 31 steals over 238 at-bats. His steals make him valuable in most fantasy formats, but his .323 OBP puts him in the lower half among leadoff hitters and a very low walk rate (four percent) suggests that he's unlikely to improve his plate discipline much at age 30. Bourgeois played well in center field last season and figures to continue to play all over the field, mostly in the outfield with an occasional start at second base.
The longer this goes on, the more it looks like Bourgeois has hit his ceiling in the high minors. Over the past three seasons, the speedy outfielder has put up a .309/.354/.423 line at Triple-A and a .215/.285/.276 line in the big leagues. Bourgeois brings speed and defense to the table, and can serve as a defensive replacement in either outfield corner or at second base, where he made a brief appearance last season. He'll battle Brian Bogusevic for the last spot on the bench, and if he sticks, could also see some additional at-bats filling in for Jeff Keppinger.
Bourgeois spent most of 2009 at Triple-A Nashville where he hit .314 with 35 stolen bases. His speed and defense keep him hanging around in the minors, but his lack of power doesn't allow him to find a major league job. He'll likely start the season in the minors and wait for an injury that allows him another trip to the majors.
Another poor season at Double-A Frisco has Bourgeois' long-term future in doubt. He's still plenty young enough to improve, but is going to have to start hitting Double-A pitching before he can progress further.
Bourgeois struggled following a mid-year promotion to Double-A. The Texas brass has moved him to second base and he'll need a retrenching year at Double-A before we can start to project his eventual role in the majors.
