Jason Bay: Likely To Retire
Bay has yet to officially retire but said that he can't imagine a scenario in which he keeps playing, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports.
ANALYSIS
Bay was previously reported to be mulling an offer with Yomiuri in Japan. It sounds like he is now leaning toward retirement, in which case he would finish his career with a strong .266/.360/.481 slash line, though he'll largely be remembered for his rapid decline at a relatively young age. After slashing .267/.384/.537 with 36 home runs and 119 RBI for the Red Sox in 2009, Bay signed a four-year, $66 million contract with the Mets. He never came close to living up to the deal, hitting just 26 home runs across three seasons in New York. He then joined the Mariners in 2013 and posted an ugly .204/.298/.393 slash line in 236 plate appearances. Unfortunately, Bay will probably be remembered more for his late career struggles than his excellent prime years with the Pirates and Red Sox.

Bay suffered through another nightmarish campaign with the Mets in 2012. Injuries (wrist, ribs, concussion) and ineffectiveness limited him to just 70 games, during which he posted a career-low .536 OPS with eight home runs and 20 RBI. The Mets ended the ineffectual relationship, buying out the final year along with voiding the 2014 vesting option on Bay's contract in November. Bay signed a one-year, $1 million non-guaranteed deal with Seattle this offseason. He'll compete for a backup outfield job in spring training but is no lock to make the roster.
