Arizona Diamondbacks
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Total Saves: 38
Closer: Committee
(10/21) Arizona posted 89 wins and 38 saves in 2024 for a 42.7% team save percentage of overall wins. The D'Backs were one of eight teams to have 10 or more pitchers record at least one save during the season. Paul Sewald (16 saves) was the only one out of the 10 to record double-digit saves for Arizona, while Justin Martinez (8), Kevin Ginkel (5), A.J. Puk (2) and Ryan Thompson (2) were the others to record multiple saves. Sewald didn't make his season debut until May due to an oblique injury, so Ginkel actually opened 2024 as the D'Backs' closer. Sewald was outstanding upon his return, racking up 11 consecutive saves with a 0.54 ERA and 0.48 WHIP across his first 16.2 innings. However, the right-hander blew 3 straight saves to open July and finished the month with a 10.80 ERA, which was enough for manager Torey Lovullo to demote him from the closer role. Ultimately, Sewald (a 2025 free-agent) was unable to reclaim closing duties due to inconsistent performance and a neck injury that ended his season prematurely.

With leverage roles in flux, Arizona acquired A.J. Puk prior to the trade deadline. Many thought Puk would take over closing duties, but Lovullo turned to Thompson initially. Ultimately, it was flamethrowing rookie Justin Martinez who emerged as the preferred option for saves. Martinez, who averaged 100.3 mph on his fastball, tallied 8 of the team's 13 saves after August 1st. He enters 2025 as the presumed favorite for saves in Arizona, but the 23-year-old had an 11.7% walk rate and 1.31 WHIP, so closing duties aren't guaranteed, especially with Puk, Ginkel and Thompson (all 2nd-year arbitration eligible) likely back in the fold. Scott McGough ($4M mutual option, $750k buyout) is uncertain to return due to poor performance last season.

Atlanta Braves
Team: Atlanta Braves
Total Saves: 40
Next in Line: Joe Jimenez Out, Pierce Johnson
(10/21) Atlanta racked up 89 wins in 2024 while recording a save in 40 of those wins. Their 44.9% team save percentage of overall wins fell short of the 50.4% league average. Only four Atlanta relievers tallied saves during the season, which was the second-fewest among all teams behind Washington (3 relievers). Raisel Iglesias (34 saves) accounted for an 85 percent team save share (5th-highest among closers), while Joe Jimenez (3), Pierce Johnson (2) and A.J. Minter (1) tallied the others. Iglesias tied for 5th in saves, while his 0.74 WHIP was 3rd-best among qualified relievers. His strikeout rate (26.3%) was down compared to prior outputs, his 5.0% walk rate was a top-15 mark among relievers. Iglesias is entering his age-35 season in 2025 and will be a free-agent in 2026, thus making him a potential trade candidate next season if Atlanta does not perform to expectations.

With A.J. Minter dealing with hip issues for much of the 2024 season, Joe Jimenez stepped into the primary setup role. He posted career-best marks in ERA (2.62), WHIP (0.99) and holds (27), the latter leading the team while ranking 10th overall in the category. Jimenez is signed through 2026 and is one of the top closers-in-waiting for the 2025 season. If Minter (hip) does not return to health in 2025, look for Dylan Lee to reprise his role as Atlanta's top lefty out of the pen. The Braves hold team options for the 2025 season on Aaron Bummer ($7.25M), Luke Jackson ($7M) and John Brebbia ($6M), so expect some turnover if they don't pick up these options. Daysbel Hernandez, a 28-year-old right-hander with strikeout upside, could benefit by moving up this leverage ladder.

  1. 6/29:A.J. Minter, who logged his first save of the season Tuesday at Philadelphia, has appeared in 3 games in 4 days. This makes Will Smith the likeliest candidate for a save chance if one were to arise Wednesday.
Baltimore Orioles
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Total Saves: 46
Closer: Felix Bautista Out
(10/21) Baltimore recorded a save in 46 of their 91 wins in 2024 for a 50.5% team save percentage that was right in line with the league average. Nine Orioles relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Craig Kimbrel leading the way with 23 saves and a 50% team save share. Seranthony Dominguez (10 saves), Yennier Cano (5), Jacob Webb (2) and Cionel Perez (2) were the other relievers to pick up multiple saves. With O's closer Felix Bautista missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, Kimbrel served as a short-term solution for the team's vacancy in the ninth inning. The veteran closer was dominant for three months, but wasn't the same after mid-July (11.50 ERA, 2.22 WHIP over 18 innings) and was subsequently released before the end of the season. Baltimore acquired Gregory Soto and Dominguez at the trade deadline, with the latter serving as the team's closer for the majority of the second half. Dominguez wasn't always sharp, but has enough high-leverage experience (38 career saves, 59 holds) that Baltimore may pick up his $8M option for 2025. With Bautista expected to be a full go in spring training, he should regain the closer role for Baltimore. However, the team has some decisions to make on Danny Coulombe ($4M team option), Cionel Perez ($2.2M team option) and Gregory Soto (3rd year arbitration). Coulombe and Perez seem likely to have their options picked up, while Soto could be a non-tender candidate.

Boston Red Sox
Team: Boston Red Sox
Total Saves: 40
Closer: Committee
(10/22) Boston recorded a save in 40 of their 81 wins in 2024 for a 49.4% team save percentage that was slightly below league average. Nine Red Sox relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Kenley Jansen leading the way with 27 saves (12th in the league) and a 67.5% team save share (10th among closers). Chase Anderson (3 saves), Chris Martin (2), Justin Slaten (2) and Josh Winckowski (2) were the other relievers to pick up multiple saves. Jansen's outputs were fairly consistent with recent seasons and the 37-year-old remained healthy for the most part. Over the course of the season, the veteran closer dealt with minor back and lat issues before closing out September on the IL with right shoulder inflammation.

With the Red Sox in contention for an AL Wild Card spot near the trade deadline, they acquired veterans Luis Garcia and Lucas Sims. Like Jansen and Martin, both righties are set to become free-agents, so Boston's late-inning hierarchy is likely to look much different in 2025. Liam Hendriks, who missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, might be the favorite to close at this point of the offseason, but he will have to prove he's healthy and effective during spring training. Slaten, Winckowski and Garrett Whitlock are obvious candidates for high-leverage roles, with Slaten a closer-in-waiting target for early 2025 drafts.

Team Notes
  1. 6/27:Tanner Houck was placed on the restricted list Monday prior to Boston's three-game series at Toronto. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber are the likeliest candidates for save opportunities should any arise during the series.
  2. 10/11:Hansel Robles exited Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday due to a stomach illness after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. He should be considered day-to-day due to his illness. Assuming he tests negative for COVID-19, it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander available for Game 4 on Monday. It was the first earned run he's allowed since August 29.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game against the Yankees, Hansel Robles has not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive outings. Both he and Adam Ottavino enter tonight's contest with two-days rest, while Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock have had one day of rest after both pitched on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs
Team: Chicago Cubs
Total Saves: 38
(10/22) Chicago recorded a save in 38 of their 83 wins in 2024 for a 45.8% team save percentage that was several points below league average (50.4%). Nine Cubs relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Hector Neris leading the way with 17 saves and a 44.7% team save share. Porter Hodge (9 saves), Adbert Alzolay (4), Keegan Thompson (2) and Jorge Lopez (2) were the other relievers to pick up multiple saves. Alzolay opened 2024 as Chicago's closer, but he was demoted from the role by mid-April due to poor performance. The right-hander would end the campaign on the IL after undergoing Tommy John surgery and is likely to miss 2025. Manager Craig Counsell often turned to the veteran Neris in the ninth inning. Neris was one of 2 relievers to record double-digit wins (10) and saves in 2024, but his ratios declined during his age-35 season and he was released by the Cubs in August. From that point on, 23-year-old rookie Porter Hodge secured 8 of the team's last 12 saves. The righty will need to improve his control (11.6% walk rate in 2024), but Hodge figures to remain part of the Cubs' high-leverage corps next season. Tyson Miller and Nate Pearson are likely to join him, while Yency Almonte, Julian Merryweather and Keegan Thompson are arbitration eligible. The Cubs have had 8-plus relievers record at least one save in each of the past four seasons, so unless they sign an experienced closer for 2025, the role could be shared.

Cincinnati Reds
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Total Saves: 36
Closer: Alexis Diaz
(10/22) Cincinnati recorded a save in 36 of their 77 wins in 2024 for a 46.8% team save percentage that was a few points below league average (50.4%). Seven Reds relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Alexis Diaz leading the way with 28 (T-9th) and a 77.8% team save share (9th among closers). Brent Suter and Justin Wilson were the only other relievers to record multiple saves - each with 2 apiece - meaning the Reds closer situation was pretty stable (under 2024 manager David Bell), even if the closer himself wasn't. Diaz's perennially poor walk rate and decreased K-rate (22.7%) attributed to a higher WHIP (1.30), which may not sit well with new manager Tito Francona. However, working in Diaz's favor is the lack of competition within his own bullpen. Fernando Cruz struck out 109 batters across 66.2 innings last season, but had similar walk issues (12.2%), while Emilio Pagan had trouble staying healthy. Both should return for 2025 and make solid closer-in-waiting targets, while Buck Farmer and Justin Wilson are set to become free-agents.

Cleveland Guardians
Team: Cleveland Guardians
Total Saves: 53
(10/22) Cleveland recorded a save in 53 of their 92 wins in 2024 for a 57.6% team save percentage that was well above league average (50.4%). Six Guardians relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Emmanuel Clase leading the AL with 47 saves (2nd overall) and an 88.7% team save share (3rd among closers). Scott Barlow (2 saves) was the other reliever to pick up multiple saves. While Clase struggled in the 2024 playoffs, he was lights out in the regular season, leading the league with a 0.61 ERA and 0.66 WHIP. Not only did he become the Guardians franchise leader in saves, he broke their single-season record for the category.

With 2023 setup man Trevor Stephan (elbow) missing the entire season, Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis and Tim Herrin ascended to important high-leverage roles. All three finished with 70-plus appearances, sub-2.00 ERAs, sub-1.00 WHIPs and are still a few years away from salary arbitration. Gaddis was fifth in the league with 33 holds, while Smith was one of five relievers overall to rack up 100-plus strikeouts. Cleveland will have to decisions to make on their first-time arbitration eligible relievers - Eli Morgan, Sam Hentges, Nick Sandlin - though they're likely to come to terms with all three.

Colorado Rockies
Team: Colorado Rockies
Total Saves: 37
Closer: Committee
(10/22) Colorado tallied a save in 37 of their 61 wins in 2024 for a 60.7% team save percentage that was ten points higher than league average. Eight Rockies recorded at least one save during the season, with Tyler Kinley leading the team with 12 for a 32.4% team save share. Victor Vodnik (9 saves), Jalen Beeks (9), Seth Halvorsen (2) and Justin Lawrence (2) were the others to record multiple saves. Beeks and Nick Mears were traded during the season, opening the door for Vodnik, Kinley and Halvorsen (in that order) to handle the ninth inning during the second half. All three figure to remain in the mix for 2025, with Kinley the presume favorite until spring training. Southpaw Luis Peralta is one to monitor, as he was successful at four levels (from High-A to the majors) last season.

Chicago White Sox
Team: Chicago White Sox
Total Saves: 21
Closer: Committee
(10/22) Chicago recorded a league-low 21 saves of their 41 wins in 2024 for a 51.2% team save percentage that was slightly above league average. Ten White Sox relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Michael Kopech leading the way with 9 saves (prior to his trade to the Dodgers) and a 42.9% team save share. John Brebbia, Tanner Banks and Jordan Leasure were the only other relief pitchers to record multiple saves, each with 2 apiece. Like Kopech, Brebbia and Banks were also traded mid-season, as the White Sox were in clear rebuild mode. Amidst a record 121-loss season, it was difficult to identify any stand out relievers who could be reliably close out games. Jordan Leasure, Prelander Berroa and Fraser Ellard have potential to emerge in 2025, but until a new manager is hired and we see who stands out during Spring Training, it is anyone's guess as to who will lead this club in saves next season. Whomever it ends up being, saves will likely be hard to come by.

Detroit Tigers
Team: Detroit Tigers
Total Saves: 45
Closer: Committee
(10/23) Detroit recorded a save in 45 of their 86 wins in 2024 for a 52.3% team save percentage that was slightly above league average. Eight Tigers relievers recorded at least one save during the season, with Jason Foley leading the team with 28 and a 62.2% team save share. Tyler Holton (8 saves), Will Vest (2), Shelby Miller (2) and Alex Lange (2) were the other relievers to pick up multiple saves. After leading Detroit with 26 saves in 2023, Lange's control issues persisted early last year and he was subsequently demoted to the minors, leaving Foley with the primary save share for much of the season. Eventually, Holton would join the fray and split closing duties with Foley, but Holton became manager A.J. Hinch's most trusted reliever in the playoffs. Foley was solid in September, but only pitched once in 7 postseason contests, casting some doubt on his prospects for opening 2025 as the Tigers' primary closer. A shared role might be the better bet between Holton, Foley and Beau Brieske, with Vest also a possibility. Holton's versatility - being able to serve as an opener, closer, or work multiple innings - may influence who gets deployed in the ninth inning on any particular day.

Houston Astros

Total Saves: 43
Closer: Josh Hader
(10/24) Houston tallied a save in 43 of their 88 wins in 2024 for a 48.9% team save percentage that was slightly below league average (50.4%). Six Astros recorded at least one save during the season, with Josh Hader leading the team with 34 (T-5th in the league) and a 79.1% team save share (8th among closers). Ryan Pressley (4 saves) and Shawn Dubin (2) were the others to pick up multiple saves. Hader's 12 home runs allowed was 4th-most among relief pitchers, but the southpaw was dominant otherwise. He led all relievers with 105 strikeouts, while his 37.8% strikeout rate ranked 3rd. Hader significantly improved his walk rate (9.0%) - his best mark since 2019 - which is even more impressive considering he racked up 71 innings (also his highest since 2019). His WHIP (0.96) improved as a result and his 8 wins only improved his fantasy value. Bryan Abreu led the league with 38 holds and also surpassed the century mark in strikeouts (103), while Pressly regressed a bit in a setup role. It will be interesting to see whether or not the Astros exercise their $14M option on Pressly and $9M option on Hector Neris, whom the team signed last August after he was released by the Cubs.

  1. 7/1:Ryan Pressly has recorded a Save in each of the past 2 days. He has yet to work 3 games in a row this season, so it's likely a save chance would go to Rafael Montero on Friday.
  2. 9/29:Ryan Pressly is currently managing a knee issue and hasn't pitched since Saturday. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. Look for Ryne Stanek or Yimi Garcia as the favorites to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Kansas City Royals
Team: Kansas City Royals
Total Saves: 41
Closer: Lucas Erceg
(10/26) Kansas City posted 86 wins and 41 saves in 2024 for a 47.7% team save percentage of overall wins. The Royals were one of eight teams to have 10 or more pitchers record at least one save during the season. James McArthur (18 saves, 43.9% team save share) and Lucas Erceg (11, 26.8%) recorded double-digit saves for Kansas City, while Chris Stratton (4) and John Schreiber (2) were the others to record multiple saves. Early season usage patterns in the ninth inning forecasted a shared closer role, but McArthur emerged with a greater-than 50 percent save share over the first few months of 2024. However, McArthur's inconsistent performance forced the Royals to bolster its bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring Hunter Harvey and Lucas Erceg. Harvey didn't pitch much for Kansas City due to injury, but Erceg was fantastic, racking up 11 of the Royals' final 15 saves after he was acquired. The trade was a long-term play for Kansas City, as the right-hander is under team control through 2029. Erceg is the favorite to open 2025 as the Royals closer, but the role could become shared if Harvey proves healthy and McArthur performs well during spring training. Meanwhile, Stratton figures to exercise his $4.5M player option for 2025, while Schreiber, Kris Bubic and Sam Long complete the bridge to the ninth inning.

Total Saves: 35
Closer: Ben Joyce
(10/24) Los Angeles recorded a save in 35 of their 66 wins in 2024 for a 55.6% team save percentage that was above league average. Eight Angels recorded at least one save during the season, with Carlos Estevez leading the team with 20 and a 57.1% team save share. Ben Joyce (4 saves), Luis Garcia (4), Roansy Contreras (2) and Guillo Zuniga (2) were the other relievers to pick up multiple saves. Estevez was remarkable for Los Angeles, posting a 2.38 ERA and 0.74 WHIP across 34 innings before the pending free-agent was traded to Philadelphia. Save chances were scarce after the deadline, as the Angels only won 16 of their final 54 games, resulting in 7 saves. Joyce, who averaged 102 mph on his fastball (99th percentile), picked up 4 of those 7 saves rather quickly before a shoulder injury ended his season prematurely. Assuming he's healthy, and barring any high-profile additions to the bullpen this winter, Joyce will likely head into spring training as the favorite to open the 2025 campaign as the Angels' closer.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Total Saves: 50
Closer: Committee
(11/11) Los Angeles recorded a save in 50 of their 98 wins in 2024 for a 51% team save percentage that was slightly above league average (50.4%). The Dodgers led the league with 14 pitchers recording at one save during the season, with Evan Phillips leading the team with 18 and a 36% team save share. Daniel Hudson (10 saves), Michael Kopech (6), Alex Vesia (5) and Anthony Banda (2) were the others to record multiple saves. At the beginning of the year, it appeared Phillips would run away with the primary save share for Los Angeles, as he had a 70% team save share through the end of April. However, a hamstring strain required a trip to the injured list for nearly one month, at which point manager Dave Roberts deployed a closer committee approach during Phillips' absence. Phillips wasn't as sharp upon his return, carrying a 6.75 ERA and 1.55 WHIP from Jun 1 through the end of July, which prompted a change in Roberts' high-leverage approach. Phillips began working earlier in games, while Hudson and the newly acquired Kopech handled closing duties for the rest of the season.

With Hudson recently announcing his retirement and other L.A. relievers now free-agents - namely Blake Treinen and Joe Kelly - there may be some changes to this leverage ladder. Phillips, Vesia, Brusdar Graterol and J.P. Feyereisen are all arbitration-eligible for the second time, while Kopech is in his final year. Ryan Brasier remains under contract for one more season before becoming a free-agent in 2026.

Total Saves: 33
Closer: Committee
(10/26) Miami recorded a save in 33 of their 62 wins in 2024 for a 53.2% team save percentage that was a few points above league average. Eight Marlins recorded at least one save during the season, with Tanner Scott leading the team with 18 and a 54.5% team save share. He was the only Miami pitcher with double-digit saves, while Calvin Faucher (6), Jesus Tinoco (3) and Darren McCaughan (2) were the others to record multiple. With the Marlins struggling, the team was active at the trade deadline, dealing away their closer Scott in addition to A.J. Puk, Bryan Hoeing and Huascar Brazoban. Faucher, Tinoco and McCaughan benefitted by ascending the closer hierarchy, with all three recording at least a save after Scott was traded, though opportunities were scarce. Andrew Nardi (elbow), John McMillon (elbow) and Anthony Bender could join the trio as part of Miami's save mix in 2025, though a favorite is unlikely to emerge until spring training. This could also be a shared role for a team likely to struggle, making it hard to get excited about any reliever in the Marlins bullpen.

Total Saves: 53
(10/26) Milwaukee racked up 93 wins in 2024 while recording a save in 53 of those wins. Their 57% team save percentage of overall wins was well above the 50.4% league average. 12 Brewers recorded saves during the season, which was 3rd-highest in the league behind the Dodgers (14) and Rays (13). With closer Devin Williams missing the first four months of the season due to fractures in his back, Trevor Megill led the team with 21 saves and a 39.6% team save share. Williams reclaimed primary closing duties upon his return in late-July, recording 14 saves in 15 chances while remaining sharp (43.2% strikeout rate). Joel Payamps (6), Abner Uribe (3) and Elvis Peguero (2) recorded multiple saves in Williams' absence. The Brewers hold a $10.5M option on the closer for the 2025 season, which they figure to pick up. Seven Twins recorded at least one save during the season, with Jhoan Duran (23 saves, 53.5% team save share) and Griffin Jax (10, 23.3%) reaching double-digits in the category. Cole Sands (4 saves) and Caleb Thielbar (3) were the others to record multiple saves. With Duran missing the first month of the 2024 campaign due to an oblique strain, Jax recorded 4 of the Twins' 8 saves during his absence. When Duran returned, he had his number called for most of Minnesota's save chances, though he pitched earlier in games on occasion and ceded opportunities to others. The flamethrower still averaged triple-digits on his fastball (100.5 mph, T-2nd among relievers), but his 28.9% strikeout rate and 14.8% swinging strike percentage both dipped from prior outputs. Duran's 61.5% LOB percentage attributed to inflated ratios. Meanwhile, Jax had his finest season to date, posting career-best marks in saves, holds (24), ERA (2.03) and WHIP (0.87). If Jax performs to that level again in 2025, he could take on even more of a shared closer role with Duran, especially as both enter their salary arbitration windows.

New York Mets
Team: New York Mets
Total Saves: 39
Closer: Edwin Diaz
Next in Line: Reed Garrett , Jose Butto
(10/28) New York recorded a save in 39 of their 89 wins in 2024 for a 43.8% team save percentage that was below league average (50.4%). The Mets were one of eight teams to have 10 or more pitchers record at least one save during the season. Edwin Diaz (20 saves, 51.3% team save share) was the only one to record double-digit saves, while Reed Garrett (4), Jake Diekman (4), Jose Butto (3), Drew Smith (2) and Jorge Lopez (2) were the others to record multiple. Diaz missed some time near midseason due to a shoulder injury and 10-game suspension, but finished most of the games he appeared in when healthy. The right-hander endured a rough patch in May, but his stability as the Mets closer wasn't in question, even if he didn't pitch at the level he did during his remarkable 2022 campaign. Diaz's 38.9% strikeout rate was 2nd among relief pitchers and right in line with his career average (40.1%).

Aside from Diaz, New York's bullpen depth was solid, albeit unspectacular. The Mets felt the need to overhaul their leverage ladder, DFA'ing both Shintaro Fujinami and Diekman near the trade deadline while acquiring Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton and Huascar Brazoban. Reed Garrett (33.6% K-rate), Jose Butto (1.07 WHIP across 74 innings) and Dedniel Nunez (35.6% K-rate, 5.9% BB-rate) showed promise, but the latter closed out the season with a forearm injury. All three will likely occupy important leverage roles in 2025, as Stanek, Adam Ottavino and Drew Smith are free-agents, while Maton ($7.75M team option) is a question mark to return.

Despite reaching 30 saves for the first time in his career, Holmes led the league with 13 blown saves and eventually lost the closer role down the stretch. In September, manager Aaron Boone turned to Luke Weaver, who became his most trusted reliever during the playoffs. Weaver was one of five relievers to eclipse 100 strikeouts (103). His stellar campaign included excellent ratios, 7 wins and 22 holds. With Holmes now a free-agent, Weaver currently sits atop the Yankees' closer hierarchy for early drafts, but it's likely that New York will look for relief help this offseason, especially with Tommy Kahnle, Tim Hill and Jonathan Loaisiga joining Holmes on the free-agent market.

  1. 7/1:Aroldis Chapman was activated from the 15-day IL. Clay Holmes has worked 3 games in the last 5 days, but did not pitch yesterday. Don't be surprised if the Yankees elect to give Holmes another day of rest with Chapman back. It's possible Chapman gets the call tonight if a save opportunity were to arise.
  2. 6/29:Aroldis Chapman is likely to return Friday.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game, Aroldis Chapman has a career 6.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 14 innings at Fenway Park. However, he logged a 2.70 ERA against Boston this season with a 8:4 K:BB in 6.2 innings, albeit with two home runs allowed.
  4. 9/29:Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) will likely be activated Wednesday.
Oakland Athletics
Team: Oakland Athletics
Total Saves: 35
Next in Line: Tyler Ferguson , Austin Adams Out
(10/28) The Athletics recorded a save in 35 of their 69 wins in 2024 for a 50.7% team save percentage that was right in line with the league average (50.4%). Five A's recorded at least one save during the season, with Mason Miller leading the team with 28 and an 80% team save share that was 7th-highest among closers. Lucas Erceg (3 saves) and Tyler Ferguson (2) were the only others to record multiple saves. Miller's role was a question mark entering the season due to his durability issues, but an outstanding spring carved a logical path to his role as the A's closer. The hurler tallied the A's first save of the season and never looked back, averaging 100.9 mph on his 4-seamer while blowing away opposing hitters at a league-leading 41.8% clip. Perhaps most importantly, Miller remained healthy for the most part, only missing a few weeks on the IL with a fractured pinkie on his non-throwing hand. The injury risk remains, but Miller's skills amplified as a reliever, so one would assume he'll continue to serve as the Athletics' closer in 2025. Tyler Ferguson, Austin Adams (forearm), Dany Jimenez and Michel Otanez are candidates for ancillary saves in 2025.

Philadelphia Phillies
Team: Philadelphia Phillies
Total Saves: 37
Closer: Committee
(10/29) Philadelphia recorded a save in 37 of their 95 wins in 2024 for a league-low 38.9% team save percentage of wins. Eight Phillies recorded at least one save during the season, with Jose Alvarado (13 saves, 35.1% team save share) and Jeff Hoffman (10, 27%) reaching double-digits in the category. 2024 was the second straight season upon which multiple pitchers logged double-digit saves under Phillies manager Rob Thomsen, who likes to mix and match in the ninth inning. Carlos Estevez (6 saves), Matt Strahm (3) and Gregory Soto (2) were the others to record multiple saves. At the beginning of the season, it appeared Alvarado would receive at least a 50% team save share, but Hoffman's brilliance in high-leverage earned him save chances as the season progressed. With Philadelphia primed for the postseason, they made one of the biggest moves on the reliever market, acquiring Estevez prior to the trade deadline. They also acquired Tanner Banks and traded away Seranthony Dominguez and Gregory Soto to Baltimore. Estevez was open to any role with the Phillies, but wound up tallying 6 of the team's 10 saves after the trade. However, since Estevez and Hoffman are free-agents for 2025, Philadelphia will have to re-tool its bullpen for the upcoming season. Alvarado and Banks remains wit the club, as well as closer-in-waiting candidate Orion Kerkering, but the team may opt to sign or trade for a reliever or two with more closing experience. A committee seems likely once again in 2025.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Team: Pittsburgh Pirates
Total Saves: 43
(11/4) Pittsburgh recorded a save in 43 of their 76 wins in 2024 for a 56.6% team save percentage that was above league average (50.4%). Eight Pirates recorded at least one save during the season, with David Bednar leading the team with 23 and a 53.5% team save share. Bednar and Aroldis Chapman (14 saves, 32.6% team save share) were the only Pittsburgh relievers with more than one save. While manager Derek Shelton's usage in the 9th inning was relatively straightforward, his patience in Bednar - who was outstanding in 2023 - eventually wore thin. Bednar dealt with lat and oblique injuries last season, which likely attributed to his inconsistent performance and subsequent demotion from the Pirates' closer role. Chapman took over in late August and was excellent down the stretch, though he's a free-agent for 2025 and may not return to Pittsburgh. The Pirates will likely bank on Bednar returning to form as a top 10 closer in the league, but they'll need to add depth to their closer hierarchy in case things play out the way they did in 2024.

San Diego Padres
Team: San Diego Padres
Total Saves: 44
(11/4) San Diego recorded a save in 44 of their 93 wins in 2024 for a 47.3% team save percentage that was slightly below league average. Only five Padres recorded at least one save during the season, with Robert Suarez leading the team with 36 (4th in the league) and an 81.8% team save share (6th-highest among closers). He was the only San Diego pitcher with double-digit saves, while Tanner Scott (4) and Adrian Morejon (2) were the others to record multiple. The Padres entered spring training 2024 without a clear-cut closer, and while there was some fantasy helium surrounding Yuki Matsui, Suarez wound up emerging for manager Mike Shildt. San Diego were major players in the relief market at the trade deadline, acquiring Scott, Jason Adam and Bryan Hoeing to join an already solid relief unit of Suarez, Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada. Despite the acquisitions - notably Scott - Suarez continued to serve as the Padres' primary closer, continuing an outstanding campaign (1.02 WHIP, 6.2% walk rate). With Scott now a free-agent, Suarez heads into 2025 as the clear favorite for closing duties. Adam, Estrada, Morejon and Matsui return to round out a high-upside leverage ladder.

Seattle Mariners
Team: Seattle Mariners
Total Saves: 34
(11/4) Seattle recorded a save in only 34 of their 85 wins in 2024 for a 40% team save percentage that was 2nd-lowest in the majors. Five Mariners recorded at least one save during the season, with Andres Munoz leading the team with a career-high 22 (14th in the league) and a 64.7% team save share (12th-highest among closers). He was the only Mariners pitcher with double-digit saves, while Ryne Stanek (7) and Tayler Saucedo (3) were the others to record multiple. Seattle was dealt a tough blow prior to the 2024 campaign when Matt Brash suffered a season-ending elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. Brash's absence left the Mariners a little thin in the late-innings, especially with Gregory Santos limited to only 7.1 innings all season. Seattle acquired Yimi Garcia near midseason, but he too hit the IL after only a few weeks. Surprisingly, the oft-injured Munoz faded the injured list, though he dealt with a few minor ailments (back injury, elbow soreness). Health permitting, Munoz returns as the favorite to close for Seattle in 2025. Brash should rejoin him in the late innings sometime prior to the 2025 All-Star break, while Collin Snider, JT Chargois and Tayler Saucedo are candidates for high leverage roles. Aside from Munoz, look for roles to be flushed out during spring training.

San Francisco Giants

Total Saves: 36
Closer: Ryan Walker
(11/4) San Francisco recorded a save in 36 of their 80 wins in 2024 for a 45% team save percentage that was below league average (50.4%) Five Giants recorded at least one save during the season, with Camilo Doval leading the team with 23 (T-10th in the league) and a 63.9% team save share (13th-highest among closers). Ryan Walker also spent time as the Giants' closer and was the only pitcher in baseball to record double-digit saves (10), wins (10) and holds (21). After a standout 2023, Doval took major steps backwards last season. His 14.4% walk rate was 2nd-worst among relief pitchers, which attributed to inflated ratios (4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) and an eventual demotion from closing duties. Doval was even optioned to the minors, at which point Walker stepped in to close games. Walker flourished in the role and emerged as one of the game's most dominant relievers. He ranked 10th among relief pitchers with both a 0.85 WHIP and 26.1 K-BB percentage. Walker is the favorite for closing duties for early 2025 drafts, but Doval will give him some competition for the role during spring training. If Doval can improve his command, he does have a chance to reclaim at least a share of the role he once held.

  1. 5/18:Camilo Doval has recorded a save in 3 straight games for San Francisco. The Giants are off on Thursday, but Doval may get a breather on Friday after his recent heavy usage.
  2. 10/4:The Giants bullpen gets a much-needed break after winning the NL West. Camilo Doval, in particular, pitched 4 times in 5 days during the final week.
  3. 10/1:Doval, Rogers and Leone have worked 2 out of the past 3 games, with Rogers throwing 47 pitches over that span. Strong possibility Rogers gets the night off against San Diego.
  4. 9/30:Doval earned his 2nd big-league save on Wednesday and may be the new closer in San Francisco.
  5. 9/29:The plans for Jake McGee (oblique) beyond Wednesday aren't entirely clear, but so long as he gets through mound work without any setbacks, a return to the Giants' bullpen for the final regular-season series against the Padres might not be out of the question.
St. Louis Cardinals
Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Total Saves: 55
(11/5) St. Louis recorded a save in 55 of their 83 wins in 2024 for a 66.3% team save percentage that was highest in baseball and well above league average (50.4%). Six Cardinals recorded at least one save during the season, with Ryan Helsley setting a franchise record and leadings the majors with 49 saves. His 89.1% team save share was the 2nd-highest percentage among closers. Ryan Fernandez (2 saves) was the other St. Louis reliever to pick up multiple saves. Perhaps the biggest surprise around Helsley's remarkable 2024 campaign was his ability to stay healthy after he missed time in each of his five seasons prior. The injury risk remains for someone who throws as hard as Helsley does - he averaged 99.6 mph on his fastball (5th among relievers) - but the right-hander still warrants a pick among the top 10 closers for 2025. Just keep in mind this is Helsley's final year of arbitration before he becomes a free-agent in 2026. If the Cardinals aren't competitive in 2025, Helsley could be on the move.

  1. 10/6:The Cardinals' highest-leverage relievers are well rested, as Gallegos, Cabrera and Reyes enter Wednesday's NL Wild Card game against the Dodgers on 4 days rest, while Garcia is on 3 days rest.
  2. 10/1:Garcia earned his 2nd save of the season Thursday night as the Cardinals give Gallegos some much deserved rest before the playoffs. Gallegos has logged a new career-high 79.1 innings this season.
Tampa Bay Rays
Team: Tampa Bay Rays
Total Saves: 51
(11/6) Tampa Bay recorded a save in 51 of their 80 wins in 2024 for a 63.8% team save percentage that was well above league average (50.4%). 13 Rays recorded at least one save during the season, which was 2nd-highest in the league behind the Dodgers (14). Pete Fairbanks led the team with 23 saves (45.1% team save share) and was the only one in double-digits. Garrett Cleavinger (6 saves), Edwin Uceta (5), Jason Adam (4), Colin Poche (2), Manuel Rodriguez (2), Richard Lovelady (2) and Phil Maton (2) were the others to record multiple. Fairbanks expectedly missed time in 2024, requiring 2 trips to the IL; one for a nerve issue in his throwing arm and the other a season-ending lat strain he suffered in August. Various relievers were afforded opportunities to close games during Fairbanks' absences. However, when Fairbanks was healthy, he tallied 23 of the team's 33 saves for a 70% team save share, which would have been a top-10 mark among closers. Unfortunately, the right-hander's stability remains capped due to persistent injury concerns. In addition, Fairbanks is a likely trade candidate due to his contract status - he makes a reasonable $3.67M in 2025, but has a $7M team option in 2026 (or $1M buyout) before he becomes a free-agent in 2027. Should a trade come to fruition, manager Kevin Cash would likely deploy a closer committee between several of his pre-or-early arbitration relievers such as Cleavinger, Uceta, Hunter Bigge or Kevin Kelly.

  1. 10/11:Collin McHugh will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher Monday against the Red Sox as part of a bullpen day in Game 4 of the ALDS, Manager Kevin Cash hasn't appointed a primary pitcher to work behind McHugh, as the Rays will instead likely turn to a cadre of arms to fill innings out of the bullpen. Josh Fleming, JT Chargois, Pete Fairbanks, J.P. Feyereisen, Andrew Kittredge and Matt Wisler tossed 20 pitches or fewer in Sunday's 13-inning loss, so the Tampa Bay bullpen should be relatively fresh for Monday's contest.
Texas Rangers
Team: Texas Rangers
Total Saves: 38
Closer: Committee
(11/6) Texas recorded a save in 38 of their 78 wins in 2024 for a 48.7% team save percentage that was slightly below league average (50.4%). Only 5 Nationals tallied saves during the season, with veteran Kirby Yates leading the team with 33 (7th in the league) and an 86.8% team save share (4th among closers). David Robertson (2 saves) was the only other reliever to record multiple, while the fantasy market's favorite to close - Jose Leclerc - tallied the team's first (and his only) save of the campaign. Yates quickly took on closing duties in April and maintained high stability in the role all year. With Texas contending for a playoff spot near the trade deadline, they elected to hold all three of their pending free-agent relievers - Yates, Robertson and Leclerc. It didn't work out and now they must restructure the entire back-end of their pen, especially after declining the $6.5M club option on Andrew Chafin, who is also now a free-agent. Among those currently on the Rangers roster, Josh Sborz and the newly-signed Roansy Contreras are the most sensible options to close, but it's pretty safe to assume their closer isn't currently on the roster.

Toronto Blue Jays

Closer: Committee
(11/6) Toronto recorded a save in 36 of their 74 wins in 2024 for a 48.6% team save percentage that was slightly below league average (50.4%). Seven Blue Jays tallied saves during the season, with Chad Green leading the team with 17 (24th in the league) and a 47.2% team save share. Jordan Romano (8 saves), Yimi Garcia (5), Genesis Cabrera (2) and Nate Pearson (2) were the others to record multiple saves. Romano was limited to just 15 appearances all year due to elbow issues, so Garcia and Green became manager John Schneider's most trusted relievers in the late innings. Garcia was ultimately traded, leaving Green to handle closing duties for the majority of the second half. Green maintained a solid 1.03 WHIP, but blew 3 saves down the stretch to suppress any 2025 optimism fantasy managers may have had for him. Romano began a throwing program last September, so the hope is he'll be healthy in time for spring training.

(11/6) Washington recorded a save in 40 of their 71 wins in 2024 for a 56.3% team save percentage that was above league average (50.4%). Only 3 Nationals tallied saves during the season, which was the fewest in the league. Even though his metrics weren't eye-popping, Kyle Finnegan maintained higher stability than expected as the Nationals' closer, racking up a career-high 38 saves (3rd in the league) for a 95% team save share that was tops among closers. The right-hander was the subject of trade rumors during the 2024 campaign, but Washington elected to hold onto its closer while dealing away his primary competition for saves (Hunter Harvey, Dylan Floro). Those rumors may persist through 2025 as Finnegan approaches free agency the following season. Jose Ferrer, Robert Garcia and Derek Law are the current next-in-line candidates for save chances should Finnegan be moved.
