2025 Fantasy Outlook
Thompson bounced between the minors and majors last season, and he was fairly effective at both stops. With the Cubs, he posted a 2.67 ERA and 36 strikeouts across 30.1 innings of relief work. Thompson backed that up with a 2.96 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 27.1 innings with Triple-A Iowa. It was a step forward for the righty, who also split time between Triple-A and the majors in 2023 but with less effective results. Thompson figures to be in the middle-relief mix for Chicago again in 2025, though there is a chance he seizes more high-leverage work. The Cubs have Porter Hodge penciled in as their closer after a promising MLB debut last year. However, Hodge is still inexperienced at the MLB level, and Chicago doesn't have a ton of proven bullpen depth behind him. That could open the door for Thompson to move up the ladder, provided he continues to pitch well and can limit the free passes, which have been an issue for him at times in his career. Avoids arbitration
Thompson agreed to a contract with the Cubs on Friday to avoid arbitration, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Thompson has bounced between Triple-A Iowa and the big leagues for the last two seasons, but he was effective out of the bullpen across 30.1 innings for the Cubs in 2024 by maintaining a 2.67 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. His control (14.2 BB%) will likely keep him from a high-leverage role, but he should contribute as a reliever in 2025.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
On a shaky Chicago pitching staff, Thompson emerged as something of a bright spot in 2022. The righty made 29 appearances and 17 starts, logging a career-high 115 innings while recording a 3.76 ERA and striking out 108 batters. That came on the heels of a solid MLB debut in 2021, when he recorded a 3.38 ERA and 55 strikeouts across 53.1 innings. Thompson had a 5.15 FIP in 2021 and 4.39 FIP last year, so some regression may be coming to his ERA, though his decent strikeout totals lend some degree of optimism moving forward. Thompson finished 2021 in a relief role after a stint on the injured list due to back tightness, though he figures to compete for a rotation spot in 2023. Marcus Stroman should lead the staff, with Kyle Hendricks behind him when healthy. Outside of those two veterans, the Cubs don't have a ton of proven starters, so Thompson could end up with pretty good job security if he pitches well.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Candidate for call-up
The Cubs are expected to call up a pitcher Friday to replace Jose Cuas, according to Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald, and Thompson is a likely candidate since he's already on the 40-man roster.
ANALYSIS
Cuas was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, and Thompson is the only other reliever at Iowa already on the 40-man roster. Thompson had a 4.71 ERA and 26:19 K:BB over 28.2 big-league innings last season and missed out on the Opening Day roster. He's struck out seven batters through six frames at Iowa this season, but his control issues have persisted as he's also walked four batters.
