2025 Fantasy Outlook
At age 34, Iglesias had one of the best seasons of his career, tying a career-high with 34 saves (5th in the league) while posting career-best marks in ERA (1.95) and WHIP (0.74). His strikeout rate (26.3%) was down compared to prior outputs as he generated fewer whiffs on his changeup and four-seamer, but his five percent walk rate was a top-15 mark among qualified relievers while his .156 batting average against ranked sixth. All four of Iglesias' offerings produced a .179 BAA or better. The veteran closer has been remarkably consistent throughout his 10-year career, constantly delivering ratios in line with his career 2.87 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, but with Iglesias entering his mid-to-late thirties, the downswing of his career may soon be on the horizon. He certainly warrants a selection as a top-10 closer for 2025, but as he enters the final year of his contract with Atlanta, he could become a trade candidate if the team does not perform to expectations. Needed on both ends of twin bill
Iglesias blew his fourth save of the season in the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. He then gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning during the second game to record his 34th save of the year.
ANALYSIS
With Atlanta clinging to a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning of the matinee and needing at least one win in the twin bill to secure a playoff spot, Iglesias got the call with nobody out and runners on first and second to try and shut down a rally, but the veteran closer gave up an RBI single to Jose Iglesias, a sacrifice fly to Mark Vientos and a two-run homer to Brandon Nimmo. Atlanta wound up losing 8-7, but Iglesias shut the door in the nightcap, taking him off the hook for what might have been a season-ruining meltdown. It was his first blown save since Aug. 27, but the second time in his final eight appearances of the regular season he's been tagged for multiple runs. Fatigue could be a factor after the 34-year-old finished the regular season with 69.1 innings, his biggest workload since 2021. Iglesias has also taken the mound four times in the last four days, which likely makes him unavailable should Atlanta have a late lead to protect Tuesday in Game 1 of its NL Wild Card Series against the Padres.

Had Iglesias not missed the first month of the season with a right shoulder strain, he may have challenged for the National League lead in saves. He finished with 33 (T-8th in the league), which was still an impressive total given the missed time. The Cuban native also had no trouble stepping right back into closing duties after after pitching in a setup role for Atlanta during the second-half of 2022. Performance-wise, Iglesias was consistent as ever, though his WHIP did suffer with an elevated BABIP. A pitch mix adjustment saw him throw his changeup as his primary for the first time in his career. He increased his usage of the pitch by +11.3%, which makes sense given it's his best offering besides his slider. On the flip side, Iglesias' fastball (.327 BAA) and sinker got crushed (.519 BAA) last season. If that trend continues, it will be interesting to see if the veteran closer scales back on those pitches. Iglesias is a top 5 closer option again for 2024.
