Notches fourth save
PMinnesota Twins
August 17, 2024
Sands earned a save against the Rangers on Saturday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota carried a three-run lead into the ninth inning, and manager Rocco Baldelli elected to call upon Sands with primary closer Jhoan Duran having pitched on three consecutive days. The decision proved to be the right one, as Sands cruised to a save by retiring the side in order on just nine pitches. The right-hander has registered a career-high four saves on the campaign, though his opportunities in that regard are highly unpredictable with Duran having a firm grasp on the closer role and Griffin Jax typically second in line with eight saves on the season.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Sands shuffled between Triple-A and the majors multiple times last season, working in a long-relief role with the Twins. He posted a respectable 3.74 ERA, but it was accompanied by an 8.7 K/9 and 5.5 BB/9. If he begins the season in the majors, he may end up splitting time between Triple-A and the big-league club again.
After a strong season at Double-A in 2021 (2.46 ERA and 10.7 K/9), Sands looked like a top rotation prospect. Despite a 5.55 ERA at Triple-A, Sands was called up to the majors several times last season thanks to a strong strikeout rate (10.5 K/9). What Sands lacks in velocity (91.7 average mph fastball) he makes up for with a sharp curve ball as his spin rate ranked in the 88th percentile per Statcast. Sands fared better as a reliever (3.44 ERA compared to a 9.49 ERA in three starts), so he may be a better candidate to compete for a middle relief role this spring.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will be developed as starter
PMinnesota Twins
February 14, 2023
Sands will be developed as a starter during spring training, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Twins executive vice president Derek Falvey was asked if any starters will make the conversion to relief, and while he did mention Sands is the closest to an arm that would make that move, Sands will build up as a starter in the Grapefruit League. The 25-year-old appeared in 11 games for the Twins in 2022 -- three as a starter -- and struggled to a 5.87 ERA with a 1.57 WHIP in 30.2 innings. Sands may be worked as a starter, but he faces an uphill battle to make the Minnesota pitching staff out of spring training.
