Closer Watch

Boston – The Red Sox did not encounter a save situation Tuesday, but they did use Jean Machi in the sixth inning of a tie game. Robbie Ross worked the ninth, also in a tie game. This is notable because Ross picked up the last save opportunity for the Red Sox last Friday. With struggling of late, the Red Sox may have moved on to Ross.

Washington – Under immense pressure for his job, Matt Williams finally caved and used Jonathan Papelbon in a non-save situation. He was used Tuesday in the eighth inning of a tie game against the Mets and the decision backfired on Williams, as Papelbon allowed a decisive solo home run in two innings of work and took the loss. The There will be no change in the closer's job, but Papelbon could log more innings as the Nationals are in desperation mode.

Recommended Pickup

Tanner Roark, P, WAS – To be clear, this is not one of those must adds in all formats where Superman is going to show up. In fact, Roark has been quite human in 35 appearances this season, including seven starts. He was nudged out of the rotation in spring training and has logged just 83.2 innings. But with Joe Ross fatigued to the point that the Nationals moved him to the bullpen, Roark finally appears to have a secure rotation spot for the duration of the season. Roark has a 2.77 ERA since August, but a 1.46 WHIP over the same time frame. His 15 wins, 2/85 ERA and 1.09 WHIP from 2014 are a thing of the past, but of starting pitching options coming online, Roark will have the experience factor over other recent September promotions. There is certainly risk here, but can be worth a flyer in deeper leagues.
