Sent back to minors camp
The Rays reassigned Johnson to their minor-league camp Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson impressed in Grapefruit League play with a .316 average and .381 on-base percentage across 16 games, but his status as non-roster player likely hurt his chances of breaking camp with the big club. He'll presumably settle into a full-time role in the infield at Triple-A Durham to begin the upcoming campaign.

2014
Johnson spent most of 2016 in Oklahoma City after coming over in a trade from the White Sox and did little to show he deserves regular playing time in the majors. He hit a middling .261/.321/.356 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and, more worryingly, was caught stealing 11 times against 26 successes. Considering his speed is his best tool and he was unable to reliably get steals against upper-level batteries, it is hard to project him as an asset in that category in the big leagues. He got a couple days in the majors in April, then came back up after the Triple-A season had ended in September, but received only six plate appearances due to being buried in the second base depth chart of an organization that prizes infield versatility. Johnson seemed to be in line for a crack at the major league second base job with the Dodgers, but following a trade to the Braves over the offseason, his spot on the major league roster is certainly more questionable. He could give Jace Peterson a run for his money at second base during the spring, but Johnson's ceiling for 2017 is still fairly low regardless of his initial showing with his new club.
