Closer Watch

Rays – Let's just start by getting this straight. Jake McGee got the save Sunday, but blew an eighth-inning lead Monday. Grant Balfour, deposed from the closer's role a week ago, got a 2.1-inning save last Wednesday, but struggled in his appearance Monday. And Juan Oviedo got his first save Monday despite giving up a solo homer. So where this merry-go-round is headed is anyone's guess. I'm betting on 'round and 'round, with lots of frustration and not a lot of answers. McGee and Oviedo are probably your best bets, but this situation is just a mess.

Cubs – Another volatile situation, another guy getting his first save. James Russell locked down his first of the year Monday with a clean bottom of the 13th. But the men to own here are Hector Rondon (for short-term saves) and Neil Ramirez (for rate stats and longer-term saves). Rondon (elbow) pitched in a tie game Monday; striking out three while allowing two baserunners. Ramirez got the saves Friday and Sunday. Russell very well might not save another game all year unless it's a fairly specific situation.

Indians – Carlos Carrasco went 2.1 innings (and struck out four) in relief of Trevor Bauer on Monday, which was enough to earn him his first MLB save. But Cleveland remains the Cody Allen show.

Cardinals – Seth Maness snaked a 1.1-inning save Thursday that only qualified because there were men on base when he came in. Believe in Trevor Rosenthal.

Recommended Pickup
Andrew Heaney, SP, MIA – Arguably the top healthy pitching prospect in baseball, the 23-year-old Heaney has breezed through the minors over the last couple of years, culminating in this season's 2.74 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 76.2 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A. Now Randy Wolf is done in Miami, and Heaney's the beneficiary. He'll make his MLB debut on Thursday against the Mets – a juicy matchup with a light-hitting squad that (at least in this Mets fan's experience) almost never hits well against guys making their first big-league starts. The lanky lefty has a sneaky-good fastball and sharp control, which could make him an instant fantasy hit.

Other Recent Recommendations: Jordy Mercer, Chris Carter, Josh Rutledge, Brandon Crawford, Charlie Morton
