Carter, acquired by the Mets in the Billy Wagner deal, saw time as a utility outfielder last season. He'll try to win a reserve role after signing with Tampa Bay, but more likely adds depth at Triple-A. He continues to put up decent numbers at Triple-A (.495 SLG the past two years in the minors), but hasn't been able to hit enough in the majors for a player with limited defensive value.
Carter made the move from first base to left field in a full season at Triple-A Pawtucket, with a few stints in Boston. The versatility made him a valuable piece for Boston when injuries hit. He's got good power and has been a good bat at every level of the minors. Defense has always been a question for Carter. He could land on the major league roster as the 25th man, filling in as a fifth outfielder and backup first baseman.
Carter was traded to Boston as part of a three-team deal in August, and finished the season at Triple-A Pawtucket. He hit a combined 19 homers at Tucson and Pawtucket, while mashing his way to a .316/.377/.504/ season and hitting righties and lefties consistently. Carter's a smart hitter with power potential, but is not considered an adept fielder. With Boston's re-signing of Mike Lowell to play third base, Kevin Youkilis is slated to play first base for the coming years, so Carter will likely begin his third straight season at Triple-A.
Carter is a stealth prospect with patience and some power, just not enough -- consider the environment -- to leapfrog Conor Jackson. The steals last year were fluky and not something to count on if he plays. He needs a trade or an injury to be a factor this year.
Carter put up great numbers in the minors last year, but he's in the wrong league; he's an awful fielder and his best position by far is the DH spot. If Arizona trades him to an AL team, pounce.
