Closer Watch

Chicago White Sox – A beleaguered bullpen is about a week away from receiving a shot in the arm. Matt Lindstrom, who began the season as the White Sox closer began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Friday and is targeting a return at some point next week. Meanwhile, the South Side finishes up a three-game set with the Minnesota Twins on Sunday and continues a six-game homestand with the Texas Rangers next week. Jacob Petricka will have at least these four games against beatable opponents to pick up another save opportunity or two before the return of Lindstrom. There remains no official word on what the pecking order in the Chicago bullpen will look like once he does rejoin the club, but Petricka has not proven a lights-out option in the back end. He struggled through the ninth inning of Friday's game with a save in Chicago's 10-8 win, but allowed a run on three hits in an adventurous outing. The White Sox are likely aiming to reacclimate Lindstrom slowly, but Petricka's 1.66 K/BB ratio seems to portend he is better suited in middle relief than end-game situations.

Recommended Pickup

Stephen Vogt, OF, OAK – Vogt has quietly been one of the A's hottest hitters, with a .965 OPS in the month of July. It is perhaps this torrid pace at the plate that gave general manager Billy Beane the confidence to send star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes packing at Thursday's trade deadline. It is assumed Vogt will eventually settle into a platoon with newly-acquired Jonny Gomes in left field to replace Cespedes' production. With Coco Crisp's latest injury, however, Vogt continues to see regular playing time and will likely see more at-bats than Gomes over the long haul due to his versatility. Eligible in most leagues at the corner outfield positions, first base and catcher, Vogt sees action all over the field and delights owners with his ability to fill gaps left by injured regulars in all fantasy formats. If he can maintain the scorching rate at which he is spraying hits across the diamond, he will not only inspire the confidence of management to garner a daily spot in the lineup; Vogt could work his way into a spot in the middle of an extremely productive Oakland order.
