Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
Marte received his second taste of the big leagues last season, appearing in 44 games for Arizona and struggling to make contact (29.8% K%) in a limited role. He doesn't have the defensive chops to handle center field, which makes him a less desirable bench option as a fourth outfielder. Considering that he will turn 26 in March, Marte is trending toward receiving the Quad-A label, but he's never been given a prolonged stretch of regular playing time in the big leagues. Between 2013 and 2014 at Triple-A Reno, Marte has hit .298/.370/.472 with 18 homers, 93 RBI and eight steals over 166 games. After being claimed off waivers by the Angels in October, Marte will look to carve out a reserve role during spring training with his new organization.
Marte didn't follow up a 2012 power surge in 2013, going deep just seven times in Triple-A Reno. He's trying to break into a crowded Arizona outfield, which will be tough. He is a prospect who has always been considered to have above-average power, but his 2014 season will need to be a lot better for him to continue having a shot at playing in the majors. Most likely, a return to Reno is on tap out of spring training as Marte would seemingly be better served with a supply of everyday at-bats in the Pacific Coast League than as a sparingly used reserve in Arizona.
