Chalmers' time as the starting point guard in Miami came to an end once the team traded for Goran Dragic at the February trade deadline. Chalmers still managed to record season averages of 10.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals in 30 minutes over 80 games for the Heat, but now that Dragic has been signed to a five-year extension, Chalmers is destined for a backup role in his final season under contract with the team. This likely means a minutes reduction for Chalmers, as he will only be a starter should Dragic be battling injuries. Nevertheless, Chalmers will still be able to serve as a solid floor leader and capable three-point shooter off the bench this season, where he has shot over 36 percent from for his career. The good news for the former Kansas Jayhawk is that he no longer has both Norris Cole and Shabazz Napier breathing down his neck for minutes at the point guard position, so while young guard Tyler Johnson could see some time in that spot on the floor, Chalmers is essentially locked into the role of being Dragic's immediate backup.
